It's been a fantastic few days in KL on behalf of Blue Security Program and UWA Defence and Security Institute at the Maritime Institute of Malaysia conference on the South China Sea. Just wrapped up I'm now officially on holidays.

OUT NOW Blue Security Issue 8 | Creating and Implementing Effective Marine and Blue Economy Policies by Asmiati Malik PhD and Bustanul Arifin States from across maritime Asia are set to benefit from the “Blue Economy.” Through qualitative analysis of policy documents, regulations, and relevant literature, the study applies a political economy framework to assess the alignment of Indonesia’s Global Maritime Fulcrum (GMF) vision and its Marine and Blue Economy policies. Achieving Indonesia’s maritime ambitions requires a clear and consistent definition of terms, alongside a balanced policy framework that integrates economic, environmental, and security dimensions. New article from Blue Security Fellow Dr Alex P Dela Cruz in Lowy Institute | Why the Philippines made a dramatic turnaround on the question of archipelagos in the law of the sea "By enacting the twin measures, the Philippines can be seen as attempting to inflict what legal scholar Douglas Guilfoyle calls a “legitimacy penalty” on Chinese acts and statements that are incompatible with the UNCLOS. With these recent developments in Philippine law, it seems the Chinese and Philippine positions have shifted. Great piece by Aristyo R. Darmawan for Blue Security Program in the Lowy Institute's Interpreter following last weekend's visit of Indonesian Pres. Prabowo to China. Well worth a read if you are interested in issues surrounding the South China Sea. 'Indonesia’s recognition of China’s overlapping claim contradicts the Indonesia-Vietnam EEZ agreement. Indonesia has yet to ratify the agreement, and the recent statement recognising China’s overlapping claim now creates uncertainty around ratification. The joint statement between Indonesia and China has betrayed Indonesia’s national interest and seems to be a huge win for Beijing. It is consequential for Indonesia’s sovereign rights to use resources in its EEZ and continental shelf, and has significantly changed the political constellation and solidarity of ASEAN claimant states in the South China Sea.'
