  • We are excited to announce that BIOMILQ's peer-reviewed publication on the human milk metabolome was recently published in Scientific Reports. The goal of this study was to understand what metabolites are widely shared among breast milk samples from lactating people of various lactation stages and backgrounds.     Breast milk is considered the gold standard of infant nutrition, but it is also known to be highly variable and dynamic. The early-life nutrition industry is striving to develop infant nutritional products that resemble the profile of breast milk as closely as possible. However, human milk and lactation are understudied, the full complexity of breast milk is still not well-defined, and the biological roles of many milk components are not fully understood.     Better knowledge of the variability of the breast milk metabolome can help us to identify components that are crucial for infant nutrition, growth, and development. Further, expanding on available research is imperative to the long-term success of improving access to better early-life nutrition. BIOMILQ is deeply committed to contributing to the human milk and lactation research space.      We are extremely thankful to all of our Breast Milk Study participants who make our work possible. • We often get asked, how are you different from precision fermentation? 🔬 BIOMILQ uses human mammary cells isolated from donated breast milk. We develop cell lines that are optimized for the production of targeted, bioauthentic human milk components. The cell lines are validated and enter a bioreactor for production. The human milk components are then collected and analyzed by various methods.    🔬 Precision fermentation is a process where a specific microbe (bacteria, yeast, etc.) is engineered to produce a specific molecule (eg, protein). The microbes are placed in a bioreactor, grow, and produce the targeted molecules/components.    The advantage of BIOMILQ's technology lies in the unique capabilities of human mammary cells (the cells that make human milk in the body) and our innovative bioprocess:   ➕ The native cell type allows for bioauthentic structure of components  ➕ The native cell type allows for human milk-like bioactivity of components ➕ A single bioprocess can produce multiple products ➕ The novel technology allows for innovation    Learn more about how BIOMILQ is unlocking the complexity of human milk: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gGjA_Y7V

  • In honor of #nationalbreastfeedingmonth, let's talk about human milk and lactation research!    Human milk is incredible – it contains an expansive reservoir of bioactive molecules that directly benefit early life development.    However, the majority of lactating parents in the US, and globally, are not able to or choose not to breastfeed for the recommended period (World Health Organization) for endless reasons (low milk supply, lack of parental leave, pain when nursing, medications, latching issues, lack of resources, lack of support, etc).    Due to the vast benefits of various human milk molecules, technologies are trying to replicate some of these components to bring the benefits of human milk to more people. However, current production methods for human milk components are extremely limited in terms of what can be reproduced. Not to mention, human milk and lactation have historically been understudied and the research has been underfunded (which is unfortunately the case for all women's health research.)    BIOMILQ has a breast milk bank from more than 300 women who donated their milk during an IRB-approved research study. We are utilizing these donations to conduct research on the intricate composition of human milk and its nutritional and functional components.    We are deeply committed to the discovery and development of research that will transform the human milk and lactation space. • 🔬 Empowering the Next Generation of Scientists 🔭   Recently, Camila Saunders, one of our talented research associates at BIOMILQ, joined a diverse career panel of scientists, meant to inspire high school students at the Cell Biology Academy (CeBA) of Duke University.   CeBA’s summer program offers high school juniors and seniors a unique, paid opportunity to dive into independent research projects, guided by graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. This hands-on experience provides a glimpse into the life of a cell biologist and equips students with the confidence and skills to embark on their scientific journeys.   BIOMILQ was proud to sponsor a student this summer, hoping to foster curiosity and encourage future scientists to question, explore, and innovate. Throughout the program, students mastered research techniques, honed their communication skills through a Duke-sponsored poster session, and gained invaluable advice on college applications and scientific careers.   A big thank you to CeBA, Duke University, and Cell Biology at Duke School of Medicine for their dedication to nurturing the next wave of scientific talent. Together, we’re shaping the future!   #STEM #FutureScientists #Education #Research #CellBiology #Inspiration #BIOMILQ #DukeUniversity

Our CEO Leila Strickland, PhD, is an expert speaker for the Bioactive Infant Formula & Nutrition Summit in August! The summit brings together industry experts with technical, commercial, and regulatory backgrounds to discuss how we can best support #infantnutrition through #innovation and analyze the journey to regulatory approval & commercialization for new technologies producing functional ingredients. Leila will present a case study on BIOMILQ's biomanufacturing platform, which utilizes the unique potential of human mammary cells to produce human milk ingredients for the betterment of human health. Additionally, we are thrilled to participate in a panel discussion with two other companies driving innovation in the space, Helaina and TurtleTree, to explore how our cutting-edge technologies can address the demand for premium, functional ingredients that bring infant formula closer to breast milk. Click the links in our comments to join us in Boston on August 6th - 8th! #infantnutrition #infantformula #biotechnology #biomanufacturing #novelingredients

  • Did you know that breastfeeding in public wasn’t legal in all 50 states until 2018, and only 14 of 50 U.S. states offer paid leave (13 + D.C.)? This August is National Breastfeeding Month, it’s also a reminder that we still need to work together to close the gap in parental support. From increasing education and access surrounding lactation support, advocating for paid parental leave, respecting all infant feeding journeys, to raising cultural awareness of diverse parenting practices, there's still much to do. Let’s unite to create a supportive environment for all parents! Swipe right to read the full agenda. #nationalbreastfeedingmonth #paidleave #diverseparenting #parentalsupport
