In honor of #nationalbreastfeedingmonth, let's talk about human milk and lactation research! Human milk is incredible – it contains an expansive reservoir of bioactive molecules that directly benefit early life development. However, the majority of lactating parents in the US, and globally, are not able to or choose not to breastfeed for the recommended period (World Health Organization) for endless reasons (low milk supply, lack of parental leave, pain when nursing, medications, latching issues, lack of resources, lack of support, etc). Due to the vast benefits of various human milk molecules, technologies are trying to replicate some of these components to bring the benefits of human milk to more people. However, current production methods for human milk components are extremely limited in terms of what can be reproduced. Not to mention, human milk and lactation have historically been understudied and the research has been underfunded (which is unfortunately the case for all women's health research.) BIOMILQ has a breast milk bank from more than 300 women who donated their milk during an IRB-approved research study. We are utilizing these donations to conduct research on the intricate composition of human milk and its nutritional and functional components. We are deeply committed to the discovery and development of research that will transform the human milk and lactation space. We are what we eat. Coming from a regenerative agriculture perspective, where the links between soil health and human gut health are strengthening, I am heartened to see ever more research on the links between gut health and the brain emerging. Medical researchers are investigating the gut microbiome and how gut microbes influence diseases that a few decades ago were thought to be confined to the brain and central nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), Cox’s lab works on Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and ALS. The hypothesis? The human gut would have an enteric nervous system, which contains "as many neurons as the spinal cord and presides over digestive processes that function as the body’s intake department: proteins, carbohydrates, alcohol, drugs, fiber, agricultural pesticides, hormones given to livestock, chemicals used in food processing, bacteria, viruses, and on and on." https://lnkd.in/eyfQaiwY

Do participants of large studies that link long term health records with biospecimens experience regret in their participation decision? Large biobanks that link biological specimens with specimen donors’ health histories are a critical tool for precision medicine, and many health care institutions have invested significant resources in setting up and building up large collections for this purpose. As biobanks require consented participation from thousands of individual donors, much research has focused on the values and preferences of new and prospective donors who are actively contemplating an invitation to participate in the collection. Few studies, however, have focused on participants’ opinions about their biobank participation in the months and years following enrollment. Lactobacillus iners is found in women with optimal and dysbiotic vaginal microbiota. Unlike other lactobacilli which contribute to maintaining a healthy environment by lowering the vaginal pH, L. iners produces relatively small amounts of lactic acid and can coexist with pathogenic bacteria, potentially facilitating conditions like bacterial vaginosis. Moreover, its resistance to metronidazole enables it to persist favouring a return to a dysbiotic state, even after antibiotic treatment. Understanding its complex interactions is crucial for advancing our knowledge of vaginal health and developing effective therapies. 🌟 Summer is here ,time to chill up🌟 Thrilled to share research indicating the potential of coconut water as a complementary therapy for ulcerative colitis. The study, led by Dr. Saurabh Kedia and team, demonstrates coconut water's efficacy in inducing clinical remission and improving outcomes in patients with mild to moderate UC. 🔍 Key Findings: - Coconut water + standard medical therapy outperformed the placebo group in achieving clinical remission and response. - No significant adverse effects were reported, highlighting the safety profile of this natural intervention. - Microbiome analysis revealed promising shifts towards gut health. This study underscores the importance of exploring alternative therapies in gastroenterology and harnessing the power of nature to enhance patient care. Kudos to the research team for their insightful work! Despite of an increase in exclusive breastfeeding, more efforts are needed to fight hunger globally. Between 2019 and 2022, up to 783 million people came across the hassels of hunger around the world. An increase of 122 million people burdened by this nasty condition. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on the state of food and nutrition in the world, better strategies in coordination and consensus are needed besides proper global partners and better blended financing in partnerships. Recording available from yesterdays Plastics and human health symposium in New York- Microplastics (MPs) and Nanoplastics(NPs) . Marina Olga Fernandez, PhD NYU Grossman School of Medicine Excellent recorded talks from: at 6 minutes - Plastics and human reproduction. Linda Kahn, NYU Grosssman School of Medicine (NYUGSM) 26 min - Phthalate exposure and pre-natal birth. Cheryl Stein, NYUGSM 42 min - EDC's and lactogenesis. Whitney Cowell, NYU Langone 55 min - Phthalate replacements and ovarian toxicity. Genoa Warner, New Jersey Institute of Technology 3 hr 25 min - Plastics and cardio/kidney metabolic disease. David Charytan, NYUGSM 3.44 min - MPs, NPs and the heart. Rebecca Florsheim, NYUGSM 3.59 min - PFAS: Why the heart cares. Sharine Wittakop, NYUGSM 4.23 min - Size matters: Identifying and quantifying NPs. Phoebe Stapleton, Rutgers University 4.44 min - MP and NP exposure assessments. Douglas Walker, Emery University 5.02 min - Measuring human exposure to MPs. Vittorio Albergamo, NYUGSM Key takeaways: *Currently NO standard procedures for measuring MPs and NPs in human bio-specimens. *The EU funded Aurora program is standardising workflows and protocols for sampling methodologies measurement and evaluation. *Plastchem report updated to 15,000+ CASRNs, unique chemical identifiers with thousands of chemicals still unaccounted for toxicity assessment. *Complexity of targeted chemical and generic chemical testing, as cocktails change toxicity and ingestion also changes characteristics >Take DEHP for example, a well studied chemical and clearly identifiable as a biomarker, having been ID'd in most urine samples in the USA (DEHP is in almost all food packaging). >DEHP increases our Cardiovascular mortality, colorectal cancer and female reproductive system cancers. >Importantly, when we ingest it, through hydrolysis and oxidation that one compound becomes six compounds - 2 Ethylhexanol (DEHP), MEHP, MEHHP, MEOHP, MECPP & MCMHP - all with unique toxicity characteristics and in combination, as a cocktail with potentially other impacts. >DEHP also is a compound that bio-accumulates and is subject to magnification. It is good to see this level of study and awareness finally gaining traction and the unscrambling of plastics chemical universe - until recently a black box cocktail of unknown chemicals neatly wrapped into a few classes with misleading recycling logos.
