Education

School-based art as therapy to support the education, health + wellbeing of children + young people aged 5-16.

About us

AT The Bus offers a school-based programme of art as therapy to support the education, health and wellbeing of children and young people aged 5-16 in Oxfordshire and London. Group sessions take place during the school day in a purposely-designed double decker bus located on school grounds or in a therapeutic studio space. AT The Bus students work in small groups led by experienced facilitators trained in The Beattie Methodology, a creative therapeutic intervention that supports mental wellbeing, alleviates anxiety, develops resilience and helps young people build their self-esteem, self-confidence and independence.

Updates

  • It really has been a huge year for AT The Bus and we wanted to take some time to reflect. We couldn't have done any of it without the incredible support of so many of you and we wanted to say an enormous thank you. Here are some of the major highlights from the year: 🏫 We welcomed four new partner schools: Sandhills Primary School and The Oxford Academy in Oxford, and Ark Brunel Primary Academy (commissioned by AllChild) and Queen’s Park Primary in London. 👫 9 new team members came on board 🥳 We marked our five-year anniversary with the publication of The Beattie Method Manual 🖼️ “Me, myself and more”, a secret postcard exhibition and sale in partnership with The North Wall Arts Centre in Oxford. 🎨 “Art for AT The Bus’, a major fundraising auction in partnership with Sotheby’s, with pieces donated by leading artists including our patrons Grayson Perry, Jenny Saville and Joanna Vestey. 🛍️ We partnered with Oxford City Council and Louisa Maybury Home on Oxford’s first charity pop up shop in Central Oxford, raising funds for AT The Bus 💻 We launched our new website atthebus.org.uk 🖼️ "Makeshift", an exhibition in support of AT The Bus from artists from the same family Lisa Swerling, Ralph Lazar and Mila Lazar exhibition. A group of students were also lucky to take part in a workshop with Lisa herself. 🎉 We exceeded our fundraising target for the Big Give Christmas Challenge! Wishing you a restful festive season, we will be back in January.

We are so grateful for the wonderful support of Columbia Threadneedle Investments EMEA APAC, one of our longest-standing partners, and are looking forward to continuing our work together in 2025.

Columbia Threadneedle Foundation works with inspiring charity partners to improve individual lives while also driving long-term social change through the power of art, sport and education as catalysts for transformation. In 2024, the Foundation continued supporting its long-term charity partners Clean Break Theatre Company, Access Sport, The National Gallery, Bounce Back Project and AT The Bus helping them to deliver their vital work. In addition, Columbia Threadneedle awarded a number of grants to support charities within the communities in which we live and work. Our employees also played an important role, dedicating their time and skills to volunteer for worthwhile causes. https://bit.ly/4fuxikp

  • It’s that time of year! We are once again taking part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge. It costs £400 for a child to attend AT The Bus for one school term. This year we are hoping to raise £20,000 giving 50 children a term of weekly sessions so they can build self-esteem, resilience and independence through art as therapy. From next Tuesday 3rd for one week, every donation to AT The Bus will be doubled. We are hugely grateful to The Childhood Trust which is championing our cause by match-funding again this year meaning every £1 you donate is worth £2 . You can support our campaign by liking and sharing our posts, as well as by donating. #biggivechristmaschallenge

Thanks AT The Bus Maggie Scott for hosting me at Oxford Acadmey in Littlemore today. It was fantastic to sit in the studio and see inclusive caring support the team offer to kids that need something a bit different. Great to hear about the impact & benefits - I’m sure it’s hugely valued by schools, parents, carers and kids alike. Anyone interested check out their website

  • We are delighted to be taking children from several of our London schools to see '3 Days | 2 Nights' by Joanna Vestey (AT The Bus patron) curated by Katy Barron, where they will experience the sights and sounds of the UK’s rainforests at the wonderful Fitzrovia Chapel. The students will be taking their experience back into the studio and we can’t wait to see what they create. #3days2nights #ForestBathing #Connection #temperaterainforest #atlanticrainforest #uk #forests #climate #environment
