The in-person visit prerequisite for telemental health services poses a challenge for those needing mental health care. We recommend extending telehealth flexibilities to ensure continued access to critical mental health services.

𝗧𝗨𝗘𝗦𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗧𝗜𝗣 #𝟭𝟰𝟯: Stepping into a leadership role, especially after a long-standing predecessor, can be challenging. To navigate the transition effectively, focus on understanding the organization, building relationships with staff and the board, and setting clear boundaries for when to listen and when to lead. Debbie Witchey's transition to CEO of ABHW highlights a balanced approach: she started with listening sessions to hear staff and board input while clearly defining a timeline for changes. This strategy helped establish trust, prevent unnecessary disruptions, and foster collaboration. Experts emphasize the importance of regular communication, such as weekly updates, to keep stakeholders informed and aligned with the new leader's vision. A thoughtful transition plan allows new leaders to earn trust, identify opportunities for growth, and guide their organization toward success. Remember: listening is vital, but action at the right time is equally crucial to inspire confidence and momentum. 📣 How do you approach leadership transitions in your organization? Medications like buprenorphine are the best way to treat opioid use disorder, but fewer than 1 in 5 people receive medication. Urge Congress to support the bipartisan #TREATSAct, which can help close the treatment gap by removing obstacles to care.

In 2022, over 25,000 people died from an overdose after being released from jail or prison. Evidence-based treatments in these facilities could have saved their lives. Supporting the Telemental Health Care Access Act can help remove barriers to mental health care and create a more inclusive system for everyone.

We applaud the House for voting to reauthorize the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) until 2031 today. Ensuring that the work of ONDCP continues is crucial for the progress we’ve made in turning the tide on the overdose crisis facing our nation, enhancing life-saving initiatives, and supporting treatment and recovery.

As part of our holiday celebration, the ABHW team had the wonderful opportunity to tour the White House today! As we near the end of 2024, we are reflecting on all the milestones, challenges, and successes we have experienced this year. We are incredibly thankful for our team's dedication and the support of our partners. This year's White House holiday theme, "Peace and Light," perfectly encapsulates the spirit of this season and our hopes for the year ahead. Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season and a bright, peaceful New Year!

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates there were over 112,000 opioid overdose deaths in the 12-month period ending in July 2023. Medications like buprenorphine are the best way to curb these deaths and treat opioid use disorder. Still, according to Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), these medications remain out of reach for too many patients: fewer than 1 in 5 people with an opioid use disorder receive medication. Accessing buprenorphine via telehealth can help close the treatment gap by removing obstacles to care. We are proud to support the bipartisan #TREATSAct, which would waive the in-person requirement for prescribing buprenorphine and increase access to care.

Today is International Persons with Disabilities Day. As behavioral health professionals, we can share reminders that not all disabilities look alike, and that there are many we can't see. The impact that physical disabilities have on mental health, along with the impact of "invisible" behavioral health disabilities, are worthy of our care and attention. Let's continue to encourage a more inclusive world for our friends who move through the world with disabilities, whatever they look like.
