About us
The Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) is the U.S.-based, national and international association that connects scholars, teachers, and practice leaders interested in research on nonprofit organizations, voluntary action, philanthropy and civil society. Founded in 1971 as the Association of Voluntary Action Scholars, ARNOVA is a neutral, open forum committed to strengthening the research about and helping shape better practice in these realms. We bring together both theoretical and applied interests, helping scholars gain insight into the day-to-day concerns of third-sector organizations, while providing nonprofit professionals with connections to research they can use to improve the work of their organizations and the quality of life for citizens and communities.

ARNOVA is delighted to be a member of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS); the collaboration and support are outstanding, and our common mission to encourage and enable scholarship to help us understand the human experience - and improve it - is absolutely mission critical for ARNOVA! The MPCSCIG (Muslim philanthropy and civil society common interest group) was founded over six years ago by MPI’s director, Dr. Shariq Siddiqui with Dr. Zeeshan Noor, Ph.D. serving as its first chair. Dr. Samir Abu Rumman and Dr. Sabith Khan, Ph.D. Khan were also a part of this initial group. Today, the group has grown to nearly 100 individuals who come together at the yearly ARNOVA conference to share a meal, catch up on each other’s projects and identify opportunities for collaboration. This year, over 60 members of the group attended the annual dinner on November 21st at the iconic Busboys and Poets restaurant in Washington DC.
