🗽 This week, in a bold move to combat the deepening housing crisis, the New York City Council has unanimously passed the 'City of Yes' initiative, an ambitious plan designed to dramatically reshape housing availability over the next decade. The city has been suffering from high rental burden with 500,000 households spending half their income on rent. The initiative includes: 🏗️ 80,000 New Homes: Aiming to significantly shrink the housing shortage over the next 15 years 💵 $5 Billion Investment: Dedicated to enhancing affordable housing and vital infrastructure 🔃 Zoning Changes: Creating opportunities for more housing near transit and commercial areas 🅿️ Parking Revisions: Reducing parking mandates to support new housing near transit hubs 🌆 This is a monumental initiative to attack the housing crisis. But this is just the start, tackling the housing crisis requires not only bold policy changes but also the adoption of advanced technological solutions and innovations. By accelerating real estate development cycles, we can more effectively meet the urgent demand for housing. The New York Times New York City Council

Our work with the inaugural NYC Mass Timber Studio (championed by our New York Regional Director Momo Sun, P.E., P.Eng.) exemplifies our mission at WoodWorks: to help project teams navigate the nuances of wood design and make impactful projects a reality. The studio, which involved a nine-month stretch of technical assistance for seven projects (across the city's 5 boroughs) in preliminary planning and design wrapped up last week. 🗞️ This week, our Chief Product Officer, Kyle MertensMeyer, presented our design work for The Prospect at the final event of the NYC Mass Timber Studio at AIA New York | Center for Architecture. We are incredibly proud to be one of the 7 projects selected for this prestigious program along with our real estate and architecture partner neighbor. 🏙️ The Prospect is a prototype development located in Brooklyn. The project aims to provide a rapidly deployable and scalable solution for R6A-zoned properties in Brooklyn. Mass timber was selected as the primary material to accelerate construction through prefabrication, reduce embodied carbon, and offer a differentiated, sustainable product to the Brooklyn market. The design of The Prospect reflects our core principles: 🌳 Decarbonization: Reducing embodied carbon through mass timber ⚡ Construction Speed: Boosting construction speed and efficiency with prefabrication 🔧 Repeatable Modular Kit: Creating a scalable prototype to be rolled out to multiple sites in NYC 🏡 Market Differentiation: Designing unique, beautiful spaces that are highly functional 🙏🏻 A huge thank you to New York City Economic Development Corporation, especially Gizem Karagoz and Nicole Spina, for leading this initiative and pushing for innovative technologies, supporting the startup ecosystem in NYC, and championing more sustainable construction methods like mass timber. Your support is paving the way for the future of sustainable urban development! We are honored to be part of this trailblazing studio, helping shape the future of urban development 🌍 Check out some renderings of The Prospect below!👇🏻
