At #SkanskaResidential, we have a solid plan for the next three years, seamlessly aligning with our ambitious vision for 2045. At our recent conference, we glimpsed into a future of carbon-free living and sustainable residential development, with insights from Antonín Lupíšek of CVUT UCEEB and Marcin Milczarski (on/jego) of VIVERNO, and we discovered: 🌍 Energy Efficiency and Innovation We explored cutting-edge technologies that reduce energy consumption in buildings, like advanced insulation and smart energy management systems. The future of residential buildings will be more sustainable and energy-efficient. 🔄 Circular Economy in Construction The concept of "remolition," where every material from a demolished building is reused, is crucial for sustainable construction and waste reduction. 🏭 Transition from Coal Efforts to diversify the energy mix of heating plants in coal-dependent regions are essential for reducing carbon emissions and promoting cleaner energy sources. 🌡️ Cooling Technologies With rising temperatures, energy-efficient cooling systems are becoming more important. These systems can significantly cut energy consumption and costs. 🚗 Electromobility Advancements in electromobility hold promise for sustainable transportation and Skanska will continue to prepare its projects for it. 🏗️ Sustainable Urban Development The focus is on brownfield redevelopment and urban innovations to accommodate growing urban populations sustainably. 🏘️ Affordable Housing Creating affordable housing in large cities amidst stricter regulations and higher energy efficiency standards is challenging but we are not giving up our efforts. 📊 ESG and Reporting Digitalization and AI can streamline ESG data management, helping developers meet sustainability goals more efficiently. The journey to sustainable living is dynamic and full of opportunities. Together, we’re building homes and communities that reflect a better future. 🌱 What would you add to our list? #SustainableLiving #GreenConstruction #FutureOfHousing #InnovationForClimate #SkanskaForTomorrow

Imagine your home and office not just consuming energy but actively storing energy for the future. In the latest episode of Shaping Sustainable Places, Skanska’s Henrik Ahnström explains how buildings like Powerhouse Brattørkaia in Norway and Hyllie Terrass in Sweden work as batteries to store electricity or thermal power. Plus Niklas Johansson from E.ON explains how a clever solution could cut the energy needed by consumers for heating and cooling by as much as 75 percent. https://lnkd.in/giTkGTWq To learn more, tune in to the full episode of Shaping Sustainable Places on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or YouTube. #ShapingSustainablePlaces #Podcast #KnowledgeAndForesight

On this day five years ago, we publicly launched the Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3) tool in partnership with Microsoft, the University of Washington and C Change Labs. Since then, we have used the EC3 tool to identify lower-carbon product alternatives to avoid the equivalent of 8,430 metric tons of carbon emissions on Skanska projects. https://lnkd.in/e_sUBpwc Today, thousands of designers, builders, and building owners and operators use the tool, which is made available through Building Transparency, a US-based non-profit organization. https://lnkd.in/esS9RR2P Scroll through to learn about our key findings using the EC3 tool. #EC3 #Innovation #Technology #KnowledgeAndForesight #Skanska #Construction #Development #Decarbonization #Sustainability

See below Su (Sujata) Sharma's inspired post, following our UK President & CEO, Katrina Dowding's lecture at The Joint Contracts Tribunal Povey Lecture last week.

Why did a CEO talk about geese 🦢 and petrol stations ⛽? Katrina Dowding, Skanska’s CEO, used these bold examples in her prestigious The Joint Contracts Tribunal Povey Lecture last week, entitled “The Secret to More Collaborative Contracting and Better Project Outcomes Through Diversity and Inclusion”. She shared her 35-year journey in construction. She made one point resoundingly clear; diversity and inclusion are *non-negotiable*. Katy’s words took me back to 1993, when I entered a construction industry that thankfully looked nothing like today. Three takeaways: 1. “Invisible” barriers are real – When Katy started as a junior QS, there weren’t even women’s toilets on site. Every day for two years, she walked 30 minutes to a petrol station. TWO YEARS. This would have added up to 1.3 million minutes of wasted work time if it had continued her entire career. “Invisible” barriers like these hold us back. 2. Diverse teams win – A Stamford University study proves it: *diverse teams perform better, every time*. Teams with different perspectives- “a team of ducks 🦆 with one goose” question assumptions and outshine a team of all ducks. Diversity isn’t just a “nice to have.” It translates into results. 3. Collaborative contracting gives mutual benefits to all -. Build UK showed this during Covid through its Standard Operating Procedures. The JCT has put this in the forefront of its 2024 contracts requiring parties to work collaboratively. Katy’s lecture reminded me of how far the construction industry has come. But let’s be clear: we’re not there yet. → Diversity and Inclusion are essentials, not "nice to haves". → Change is happening, but it’s well overdue. The Circle Partnership Karen Kirkham Build UK
