The Algorithmic Justice League is an organization that combines art and research to illuminate the social implications and harms of artificial intelligence. AJL’s mission is to raise public awareness about the impacts of AI, equip advocates with empirical research to bolster campaigns, build the voice and choice of most impacted communities, and galvanize researchers, policymakers, and industry practitioners to mitigate AI bias and harms.

“Nobody wants a misdiagnosis. There should be a higher bar.” - Dr. Alondra Nelson, professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. In a study examining thousands of snippets transcribed by OpenAI’s Whisper tool, professors Allison Koenecke of Cornell University and Mona Sloane, Ph.D. of University of Virginia found that the program is prone to making up chunks of texts or entire sentences. They discovered that 40% of these fabricated texts, known as hallucinations, were “harmful or concerning” because the speaker’s words were misinterpreted or misrepresented. Our founder, Dr. Joy Buolamwini is the Primetime Speaker at the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) annual convention in Boston today (Nov 22nd)! This amazing event includes a lineup of keynote speakers including Supreme Court Justice Kentaji Brown Jackson, and a Youth Ingenuity and Artificial Intelligence Panel hosted by Clifford Lee of Northeastern University and José R. Lizárraga, PhD of University of California, Berkeley. This panel will highlight the research about youth who use AI in a range of different ways.
