Metrology for Food Safety in the Circular Economy: Targeted and Screening Methods for Contaminants in Food and Packaging
About us
To ensure a high level of food safety throughout production and distribution, it is crucial to improve and harmonise analytical techniques for contaminant quantification. This constitutes the basis for reliable data regarding food product compliance with regulations and for resolving disputes and minimising financial losses within the food industry. The ScreenFood project will develop reference methods and reference materials for quantifying contaminants in both food and food packaging, with a specific emphasis on recycled materials. These metrological tools will aid industries in guaranteeing the delivery of safe food and sustainable packaging while adhering to regulatory requirements. The project will address the need for informed and safe use of food packaging materials and support the trust of end-users and consumers. Facility: Quantum Metrology and Nanotechnology Project duration: 01.06.2024 - 31.05.2027 Funding: EURAMET Metrology Partnership

23IND13 ScreenFood Project representatives actively participated at the RAFA 2024 Conference, taking place from 8-11 November, in Prague. Chiara Portesi, INRIM provided a comprehensive presentation focused on the overview of the project, its main research actions, aims and objectives, including the introduction of the wide network of partners contributing to the targeted expected results. The work presented by Consolato Schiavone, INRIM was focused, in the framework of the #ScreenFood project, on the interlaboratory validation study on #PFAS quantification in #fruits and #vegetables in order to evaluate the achievability of latest EU targeted Limits of Quantification. This work was conducted in collaboration with the CVUA Freiburg, also the EURL-POPs, and the Waters Corporation Demo-lab in Milan. Charlotte Hauschildt, PhD Student @Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung in the framework of #ScreenFood project, presented the first results of her research on the 'Development of methods to improve measurements of PFAS using GC-MS'. We thank RAFA 2024 organisers for the opportunity and for the successful conference. We look forward to continuing the fruitful collaboration. #foodsafety INRiM - Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica IMPreSA - Metrological Infrastructure for Food Safety Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung

🎉 Congratulations to Consolato Schiavone for his great talk on #PFAS testing in the first #foodcontaminant session at #RAFA 2024! We are very proud to support the study and method validation in collaboration with INRiM - Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica and CVUA Freiburg the EURL POPs. A big thank you to my colleagues Arianna Busico and Andrea Perissi from Waters Italy! 👍 Consolato‘s explanation of the functionality of the mixed mode column Premier BEH C18 AX for the combined analysis of short- and long-chained PFAS was a highlight.
