You can have very intelligent people with divergent views yet you can have people who have a belligerent approach towards things and there are some who get put off by high decibel arguments. The key thing is to make sure that you engage everyone meaningfully. Get sense in the madness. Approach the situation in a manner where everyone has to speak and everyone is heard. When you engage everyone, it becomes easier to get to solutions.

The biggest challenge for a great group session isn't muzzling the loudest; it's amplifying the quietest. So setting expectations is important. Being clear about the rules is important. Agreeing what is in scope / out of scope is important. Highlighting that you want to give equal airtime to all participants is important. I always love to use a joint agenda. Rather than telling people the goals take 5 mins at the start to ask every person what they want to get out of the session. This gives you a chance to ensure everyone is engaged, manage expectations, and build joint accountability. Plus, if people feel they will be heard they are more likely to listen to others until their point arises.
