the most sustainable packaging is the one that do not exist. The strategies are already known: rethinking urban design (ex: policentric cities), remodelling business processes with a more distributed economy (with more proximity of consumer-producer), changing life styles (ex: people getting involved on urban agriculture), promoting the consumption of bulk products, promoting sufficient consumption instead of efficient consumption, promoting eating habits aligned to the seasonal products available locally, etc, etc, etc.

Many "biodegradable" products are not labeled correctly and/or are not certified by any independent or trustworthy government agency or third party organization. And even if they are certified, they may not be biodegradable in the situation in which they are discarded. So this is an area with huge ramifications for the public filled with misinformation and inconsistency. Reusable packaging is better, in my opinion.

To my mind LESS is MORE.. It helps in -keeping costs low -minimises use of resources -better user experience -less waste (tell me about it ...as an e-commerce brand the kind of waste that we generate just from packaging is not funny.. but again you can sell the corrugated boxes to the recyclers and use biodegradable poly bags .) When packaging is necessary, biodegradable and/or compostable is a great alternative, particularly when it's made from mushroom mycelium, or waste products like shrimp shells, banana peels, coconut husks, etc.

The way to get started is to look for certified home compostable materials and not for industrial compostable materials in your packaging. It might be a start to exploring better options and if you find a supplier who makes home compostable along with edible packaging solutions then it's a no brainer.

This can be a solution if the packaging is certified as "edible" and is non-toxic. Claims that something is "edible" need to be backed up with some type of FDA or other specifications.

In my opinion, this approach has little use cases. A packaging product gets is contact with various things and it might be contaminated. On the other hand, if you can ensure no contamination, why bother packaging the product at all? I‘ve seen material being sprayed on vegetables with skins/shells that are not supposed to be eaten and which are biodegrable. That makes more sense. You could use it on pineapple or coconuts, for example.

Compostable foodware and packaging is only good if it is part of a complete and well-thought-out SYSTEM. We can't have people buying products in compostable packaging if they don't have access to a composting collection and processing program. And compostable packaging that compost processors don't want is bad! This generally means that compostable plastic is not a solution.

I think there are a few good use cases, however I agree with Peter Schultze-Allen. A real biodegradable product may also need more resources in producing it compared to a pooled recycling packaging.

Reusable packaging materials increase the frequency of usage of the same materials/products for a longer time, reducing the consumption of new products and contributing to a lower carbon footprint. If the packaging is made up of leftover materials from natural resources for example a storage bag made up of an old cotton shirt not only increases the durability of the material cotton as a piece of clothing but also gives a new life to the existing product and allows one to use their creativity to create a new reusable product saving it from going into the landfill.

Working in a hotel, most fruit and vegetable is being delivered in paperboxes or single use plastics. Reusable packaging is not used enough so far. I personally think it would be one of the best approaches though. However, some regulation or ruling would be necessary to implement a widespread infrastructure. So far the single use option is being considered cheaper as producers need to invest in these reusable boxes and they need to ensure these boxes get returned to them. A good example in Germany is „Memo Versand“. They offer reusable boxes that get picked up by the parcel service after delivering the product. We use it on a regular basis and it works very well.

The answer to most of these questions is, that a mixed approach will be necessary. For every use case a different approach might be suitable. Let‘s take europallets, for example. A unified system, wide spread and well functioning. This could be a pilot scheme for other packaging infrastructures. Pooling packaging is useful where a regular delivery cycle is present. For one-time deliveries using a pooled packaging could be less practical.
