Sustainable packaging for the Food and Beverage segment has a huge scope, but before that for starters, I want to clarify the difference between a Compostable material and a Biodegradable material. Most of the time they are used synonymously, but they are not always the same, like for example PLA starts getting composted within 6 months only if it is kept above 60°C and 80% RH under Industrial Composting soil conditions, and then it takes its own time further to Biodegrade slowly upto 2 years max and vanish. The first stage of the end-of-life of the material is Compost and then Biodegradation. In my opinion, Compostable material is a better choice as they discourage littering and promote collection and disposal to Industrial Composter.

There is no better way in my opinion for this packaging used for certain products Obviously things like certain liquids will be better in glass which is very recyclable

Recyclable products can be highly successful with availability of proper recycling infrastructures and regulations. We have seen recent progress with some interesting recycling protocols being introduced by 4evergreen, CEPI, Ceflex, PTS. I want to include Paper based material also in the list along with Aluminium, Glass for the preferred recyclable material for food and beverage packaging.

Glass packaging should be returned washed and reused. Brown paper bags were great back in the day and could be used more often. Never use plastic if there is an alternative

The harm posed by plastic cutlery is greater than that of food packaging boxes. Although they don't appear like much, they are challenging to collect and recycle. I came across an Indian start-up business manufacturing cutlery out of edible flour and pulses. They are available in various tastes that go well with both savoury and sweet foods. Commercialising this concept would be fantastic. It would improve the environment and add interest to the dining experience.

Having come from plastic recycling background, (primarily PET) I will say that lightweight comes with its own issues. During the early stages of the process, granulation and washing are followed by drying and paper separation. What we encountered was that the lighter the recycled containers were, the more difficult it was to remove the excess label material, and there was a significant loss of the granulated plastic. We developed methods to alleviate some of the problems, but it made the process less efficient and more time consuming. The "design considerations" should include post consumer handling of the packaging as well.
