What do you do if your team members lack motivation and inspiration?

In my experience it can happen with failure - a project going wrong, business drying up, etc. In a start-up fundraising office, years ago, no appeal met with yes for weeks. Once you've understood the causes, link them to something that reminds people of when things have gone well - and to why they went well. Teach the team to learn from failure - and do better next time. We once had a big grant come in, out of the blue, on a Monday over 12 months after the proposal had been sent. That became Pigeon Monday. I did a pigeon dance (don't ask). Pigeon Monday became shorthand for getting great, well-targeted proposals out, week after week, because you never knew when one of them would come flying back, with funding, like a homing pigeon.

In my preview Inspiration and motivation are directly proportional to each other. Someone's inspiration will ignite one's motivation. Because of this continuous inspiration, the feeling of competition with a motivation to aspire a goal is one will act. This is the reason everyone doesn't have an inspiration and cannot even be motivated. The lack of motivation and inspiration doesn´t happen from night to day. So, it´s important to develop a strategy to mitigate that. First, we need to understand why team members lack motivation because that will help to tailor our approach. Then, we need to communicate effectively: share our vision, goals, and expectations clearly and listen actively to team members’ ideas, opinions, and feedback. After, we should empower team members by giving them autonomy and decision-making authority as engaged employees feel more connected to their work. And last, we need to lead by example, demonstrate passion, commitment, and a positive attitude, recognize and reward achievements. A motivated environment, will create a positive impact on our teams

When my people lack inspiration and motivation, I listen first and assess what may have led to this. From there, I determine the possible ways to help them move forward. I’ve always believed that listening first will make the process of addressing any concern more efficient and effective.

Understand where are they coming from. And this can be achieved through the ff: 1. One on one conversations - depending on the openness level of each employee, having a real, honest and candid conversation will help you identify the root causes 2. Skip level discussions - let's acknowledge that as leaders, we also contribute to the stress and demotivation of our employees. One way to address it is to allow.your senior managers to keep in touch with them to have an unbiased view of the situation.

If my team lacks motivation and inspiration, I would adopt several approaches to help them regain enthusiasm and excitement. Firstly, I would conduct conversations to understand the reasons behind each individual's lack of motivation. Through these conversations, I would map out specific challenges and provide personalized support. After that, I would organize team brainstorming sessions to generate new ideas and goals, encouraging active participation from everyone. I would also foster a positive and collaborative work environment, recognizing and celebrating both individual and collective achievements. Finally, I would establish a continuous feedback system.

If I discovered that my team was unmotivated- I would take steps to uncover why? What is the root cause? What is not working? What would work best? How do you see this being a simpler, cost effective alternative?

Here are ways to get started: 1. Start by having candid conversations with team members to understand what's causing their lack of motivation. It could be anything from unclear expectations, personal issues, or feeling undervalued. 2. Look for patterns in their behaviour and performance to pinpoint common themes or underlying issues contributing to the lack of motivation. 3. Consider conducting one-on-one meetings with team members to provide them with a safe space to express their concerns and discuss potential solutions. 4. Analyse recent changes in the work environment, such as organizational restructuring or shifts in team dynamics, to identify potential triggers for decreased motivation.

Implement a new policy where every decision must be made by a Magic 8-Ball. It’s about time you acknowledged that it probably makes better decisions than half the team.

Often, individualised support and coaching helps team members overcome challenges and develop the skills they need to succeed. - Providing regular feedback and recognition can also boost morale and motivation. - Implement a buddy system where team members can support and hold each other accountable for achieving their goals, fostering a sense of camaraderie and mutual support.

Supporting the growth of people and encouraging to follow what's inspirational for them, making them feel like they can achieve their personal goals.

Offer clear direction, guidance, and resources to help your team members understand their roles, responsibilities, and goals. Be available to provide support, mentorship, and coaching as needed, empowering them to overcome obstacles and achieve success in their roles.

Clarify team goals and individual roles, ensuring everyone understands how their work contributes to the larger mission. Offer support by providing the necessary tools, training, and resources. Mentorship programs can also be instrumental in providing direction and support.

I would create surveys and anonymous questionnaires to gather information on what can improve motivation. This would include questions on time breaks, pto, birthday parties, annual salary increases, and benefits enrollments.

I consider that supporting your team in identifying their strenghts and offering gembas in specific roles or assigning tasks they truly feel motivated and inspired is the key to unleash their potential and regaining the confidence and boost they are currently lacking.

Often leaders or coaches feel they have to give the direction, when more often than not, the Individual contributor (IC) is the SME in the area. When it comes to motivation, generally a support first approach should be taken, giving the IC the ability to set themselves a clear goal, and helping put the bridges and buffers in place to help them along the path.

To begin with, connect with the team members to identify the reason behind their lack of motivation and inspiration and understand what interests them. Accordingly, guide and support them with necessary resources, learning and development opportunities to achieve the goals while keeping their interests aligned.

Become the motivation. Offer incentives. Give praise and when the need to criticize comes around be constructive and supporting with it. A good leader always motivates. If someone is lacking look at yourself first.

Face new challenges and switch perspective can definitely increase the motivation, although it's not always possible, especially if you are in a fast growing start-up. Offer the team opportunities to learn new things, sometimes even not directly related to their day-to-day activities, might also be a good way to promote creativity and give people the possibility to exchange ideas and discuss different topics.

Similar to discovering root cause, learning should be a continuous journey. If IC's stop learning it's very easy for them to stop and feel they "know it all". By providing support and helping build learning and development within your monthly, quarterly and yearly development plans, IC's won't just stay motivated, they will improve.

In my experience, building psychological safety among your team is key to building trust and collaboration. How you cultivate this is by modeling safety in allowing people to have voice without repercussions even when the voice may be in opposition to leadership goals. As a leader, you also have to model vulnerability and transparency yourself consistently.

I would actually have Building trust right at the top of any list when it comes to leading people. If you aren't coming from a position of trust, its all too easy for IC's to move away from being open and honest with you. This goes back to being vulnerable with individuals, allowing flexibility in their work and day to day, and supporting them as human's before any role.

Diversity of thought is a super power. Having a team from different backgrounds professionally, culturally and individually allows you to have a wide range of perspectives. It's very easy to fall into the referral trap and end up with a load of people that get on, but don't actually bring anything necessarily unique to the team. Challenging your own bias's and then hiring specifically to offset them is an important process the best leaders go through.

Most of the time, if you have the right team, with the right attitude, all of the above are just handled by the team itself. The team can understand quickly if something is wrong with some of the team members, it can involve those members, it can give team members new challenges and new responsibilities, and simply gives space to each and everyone of them to express themselves at their best. A team with the culture of collaboration, trust and sense of purpose will simply never allow anyone to feel not motivated or not inspired.

When they have a sense of control and responsibility, it can increase their motivation and engagement. - Encourage them to set their own goals and priorities, allowing them to take ownership of their professional growth and development. A un moment donné avec son équipe, il faut faire une pause lorsqu'on ressent le besoin. Dans ce cas précis, l'indicateur est tout trouvé. Par exemple le responsable peut prévoir une activité commune à l'extérieur du cadre de travail dans un cadre adéquat. Most of the time, individual team members won't be able to explain why they are struggling with motivation. But this can be a useful framing: 1. Tell them it's okay, and cut them some slack. If they are overcooked, tell them to take time off. 2. Ask them if there is stuff outside work that is preying on their mind, (no need for them to say what) and ask them what would help them address this. 3. If that isn't it, then I would sit down with them and their Birkman Report and get them to reflect on what is and isn't working for them. We aren't looking for simplistic answers: first stop is helping them identify any issues and reframe so they can suggest solutions. 4. Reshaping role content is only for the extreme case, but may be necessary.
