One of the reasons I was successful in managing HR for many years was my strong background in operations, which gave me a broader understanding of how HR directly supports business outcomes. I had a more holistic understanding of the company's business goals and managed to solve HR problems more efficiently. Being familiar with operations also empowered me to make more informed decisions that benefit both employees and the business. That’s why I always encourage my HR team to get involved in operations whenever possible. So go ahead! Head to the operations floor and help out a little. It’ll make you a better HR professional!

Get down to the basics. Understand how the business works, how it makes money and how the score (read as the financials) is kept. Only then can one connect the dots better. My background is in engineering. When I was moved up to manage a business unit, one of the first things I did was to get my financial analyst to walk me through the various components of the P&L and its connections to the business. That was my first Business Finance 101 session and I got to appreciate the big picture of business better. I wonder why Business Finance was not taught during my 4-year engineering course. We had a paper in Business & Contract Law though - which I thoroughly enjoyed. I still remember the introductory case - "Carlill v Carbolic Smoke Ball Co."

(edited)One practice of the military that stands out, and can be easily transferred to all trainees, or professionals to hone leadership skills, is this: Compulsory attachment of the trainees with all the teams, for a suitable period of time, to understand their objectives, their execution, their resources, and their limitations. So that when we come to a point of demanding their services/ support, we know realistically how our requirements are going to be met.

From my experience, collaborating with Finance and Procurement has greatly enhanced my HR skills. Working with Finance improved my understanding of budget allocation for training, helping me prioritize initiatives effectively. Collaborating with Procurement sharpened my ability to negotiate contracts and evaluate training offers, ensuring better quality programs while maintaining financial efficiency.
