I think that the key to finding a satisfying career is trying a variety of paths, and seeing what feels like the best fit. Many students already have an area of interest. We can build on that and encourage them to find paid and unpaid opportunities to professionally experience their field of interest, and that will give them an idea of what their day-to-day might be like at work. Students who do not show a strong preference for a career path should be encouraged to make a list of 3-5 professions that they think they may enjoy and thrive in, and look for opportunities there. Once again, the goal is to give them a realistic idea of what their daily experience may be like if they choose a career in [fill in the blank].

Helping students navigate career choices isn’t about handing them a map; it’s about teaching them to use a compass. Start with their interests and strengths. What excites them? What comes naturally? Pair that with real-world exposure; internships, job shadowing, or even informal chats with professionals. Encourage exploration but normalize pivots; a “wrong” choice is just a step closer to clarity. Tools like personality tests or career quizzes can spark ideas but don’t let them box students in. Share stories of people who found their way in unconventional manners; it makes the journey feel less daunting. Above all, teach them that careers are less about perfect choices and more about growth, adaptability, and building skills over time.

To help students navigate career choices, start by encouraging self-reflection to identify their interests, strengths, and values. Provide resources such as assessments, workshops, and informational interviews with professionals in various fields. Facilitate hands-on experiences like internships or job shadowing to give them a taste of different careers. Offer guidance in setting realistic goals and developing a plan for achieving them. By fostering exploration and providing support, you can empower students to make informed decisions about their future paths.
