How can you use ride-sharing services to improve public transportation?

This is a theoretical definition of ride-sharing that seems to have been written by industry lobbyists. In practice, there is little sharing in “ride-sharing” and the service offered is more similar to a taxi or limo. In many cities, the sharing option is not even enabled by providers. Ride-sharing is a misnomer.

Ride-Sharing is also an extension of public transportation like railway, or bus transportation, just with less travelers. Ride-Sharing is beneficial to accomplish a rider's goal which is to get to their desired destination. Public transportation can not take travelers to their final destinations on a high percentage rate due to the physical constraints of where a final location is or due to poor route planning logistics or municipal rules that do not allow for public transportation to enter their zones. Because of these barriers that travelers endure, Ride-sharing can be beneficial and the cost of the fare will be less due to the overall cost of the fare for all travelers is shared.

Integrating ride-sharing with public transportation can enhance accessibility and efficiency. By incorporating ride-sharing for first/last-mile connectivity, transit agencies can address gaps in service, reduce congestion, and provide a seamless, convenient travel experience. This collaboration can optimize existing infrastructure and encourage more people to choose sustainable modes of transportation.

My recipe: implement dynamic routing systems that leverage real-time data to optimize ride-sharing routes based on demand, traffic conditions, and public transportation schedules.

So kann ein Gelenkbuss 120 Personen befördern. Für Ridesharing müsste dafür etwa 10 Kleinbusse oder 30 PKWs eingesetzt werden. In den Stosszeiten ist der öffentliche Verkehr immer effizienter als Ridesharing.

This is again a lobbyist’s definition of “ride-sharing”. The companies that offer these services are for profit entities that have a mandate from their owners to maximize profit. This means that they will rationally target areas of largest demand, which may or may not be where transit is operating. They do not care if the trips they serve complement transit, replace transit or are new trips. If communities want effective, affordable and efficient transportation, they will support transit and curb the growth of “ride-sharing” to avoid competing with transit. Indeed, every trip made on “ride-sharing” that could have been made on transit reduces the viability of transit for everyone.

Ridesharing, also referred to as micro-transit has potential with emerging technologies. Ridesharings selling points are bringing service to underserved/inaccessible areas or providing service at more convenient times. However, the cost remains high and inefficient. Experiments with subsidized Uber and lyft rides have been unable to overcome cost issues. Wilson, North Carolina is a prime example. That said, there is potential in using the software and applications for a fleet pool of on demand public transit vehicles. In addition, autonomous vehicles could potentially make costs more viable.

This is all hogwash. The only way ride-sharing benefits public transportation uses is if their government does not provide adequate public transportation services, or in areas where land use does not support frequent services. Everything else is fiction.

This is very creative and very bizarre. The only benefit, if private companies even deign to provide the data, is to identify where public transportation is inadequate or poorly run.

Don’t let lobbyists write factsheets. This was entirely one-sided and based on disproven theories. There is little else to say.
