I have often advocated SWOT analysis as a basis for strategic discussions. There are at least 2 rather obvious challenges. The first one is to be objective, which in my experience is more difficult than one would expect. But the main challenge is to actually draw conclusions and to develop a good action plan. Most executives whom I have collaborated with try to compensate for or to eliminate weaknesses. My own atittude is that it is far more important to enhance the strengths and to take advantage of the opportunities. Managing an enterprise is similar to playing fotball (soccer). You can choose a strategy which is highly defensive or you can attack. In both cases you have to balance your approach, but you still have to choose.
