Growing companies provide more opportunities for employees. In sales - if you want to lead a team - or join a different department- it will be easier to do in a growing company than one that is limping along. It’s also easier to do in a large organization that hires entry level reps as they tend to have strong training and promotion opportunities. Interview for the job you are applying for- but inquire about future product launches, new markets, and areas of company growth.

Inquire about their top sales challenges, successful strategies used by their best salespeople, and the qualities they value most in a team member. Also, ask about their expectations for the role, available support and training, and their criteria for measuring success.

One thing I’d want to know about in terms of compensation is what the top reps are earning in their best years. What do they earn in tougher market conditions? How the middle of the pack performs and exact comp plan details wouldn’t matter much as what the best reps have been able to achieve. In some cases I’ve even placed high performing reps who’ve produced 3X the current “top rep” (even unexpectedly in very mature software companies) so sometimes we create our own limitations when we assess our potential and tie it to what’s been done in the past. Comp matters but what matters even more is your belief in and your ability to deeply understand the value your solution provides to customers. If you don’t have that - the comp doesn’t matter.

For salespeople- we usually know where we stand in terms of our performance. We are hitting the numbers or we are not. No need to wait for a performance review- by then it may be too late! The best feedback you will ever get is from the market and feedback you seek out from the companies’ top reps and best customers. Your sales leader will be able to provide wisdom and deal guidance. Learn all you can and don’t be afraid to experiment. But take the initiative and don’t wait for feedback- be proactive about asking for it and apply what you can immediately.
