When you think of massage, you quickly think of its physical effects: it relaxes our muscles and promotes blood flow, for example. Yet the nice feeling after a massage has not only to do with a relaxed body. Curious about what a massage does to our emotions? We explain.
The autonomic nervous system
A massage stimulates both parts of the autonomic nervous system(the part that nervous system that regulates a large number of organ functions). This allows our organs to function better and all hormones to be adequately produced. As resulting you feel fitter and more cheerful.
The parasympathetic nervous system
The autonomic nervous system includes the orthosympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. These have opposite effects. The first regulates action and effort and has an activating influence on the organs. The parasympathetic regulates rest, relaxation and recovery. Many people have a poorly developed parasympathetic nervous system. You will notice this in fatigue, unexplained aches and pains and cold hands and feet.
Massage and hormones
You probably have heard about that touch stimulates the production of the chemical oxytocin, also called the cuddle hormone. This provides a sense of security and calm. Of course, this already makes you happy, but this is not all. Endorphins and serotonin are hormones that also jump when a massage arrives. Endorphins are the body’s own painkillers that also create a feeling of happiness and serotonin has a positive influence on mood, self-confidence and sleep patterns. Real feel-good substances, in other words. The production of cortisol, also known as the stress hormone, and norepinephrine actually decrease, making you feel calmer and more balanced.
