    Candle Making

    A BIT OF HISTORY

    First Use of Candles

Candles have been used for several centuries. Their main use was, of course, as a source of light, at a time when the existence of electricity was a long way off! Their form was that of a taper, a long, thin reed coated with vegetable or animal fat, which was left to dry and then covered with tallow.

Despite its usefulness, the candle had some negative aspects. It burned the fingers when held; it produced a strong, unpleasant odor when burned; and its flame, which could blacken a lot of things, had to be watched. This is why beeswax candles eventually appeared. It should be noted, however, that wax was much more expensive than tallow at the time, so beeswax candles were reserved for the nobility or the Church. The average person was left with tallow candles, which were cheaper and easier to make.

The candle as we know it did not appear until the nineteenth century. Wicks were made from braided cotton (more practical for burning) and the main raw material used was paraffin or stearin. Tallow was no longer used at all.

Since that time, the use of candles has changed, evolving quite a bit from simply being used as a light source. Candles are now decorative and promote a sense of well-being and serenity, setting a peaceful and warm, cocooning atmosphere. Lighting candles also adds a pleasant aroma to the home, thanks to the many fragrances and essential oils that can be added to them!

    The Significance of Candles

Candles are used nowadays to create a warm and cozy atmosphere at home. Since their invention, however, they have also been used in the practice of faith. They are indeed the symbol of spirituality, purification, and the soul.

Candles can also convey different meanings depending on the dyes added to the wax. Indeed, each color has its own symbolism and associations. Some people even use different colors of candles to represent intentions.

Some colors and what they symbolize:

    White: purification, innocence, hope, truth

    Blue: protection, communication, wisdom

    Yellow: concentration, healing, knowledge

Black: banishment, detachment, removal of bad energy

    Orange: abundance, joy, energy, vitality

    Pink: love, tenderness, affection, generosity

Red: love, passion, creativity, sexuality, strength

    Green: luck, fortune, prosperity, balance

    Purple: spirituality, peace, calm, wisdom

This list is not exhaustive, and you can freely associate colors with the symbols you prefer. There are really no rules!
