About the Author
INTRODUCTION
I started selling on Ebay in 2005, first using the site to liquidate excess inventory from my home-based gift basket business before changing my business model to sell new gift products (ceramics, plush toys, books) on both Ebay and Amazon. Along the way, I began teaching others how to sell on Ebay through videos on my YouTube channel; and in 2013, I started writing books about how to make money on Ebay.
My very first book, 101 Items to Sell on Ebay: How to Make Money Selling Garage Sale & Thrift Store Finds!
remains one of my best-selling books to date. That book's success has prompted me to follow up with this sequel, 101 MORE Items to Sell on Ebay!
; I hope that it proves just as helpful to fellow Ebay sellers as the first volume has been!
Since I started picking
(or reselling,
as I prefer to call it) items up at garage sales, estate sales, and thrift stores to resell on Ebay, the number one question I continually get asked is, What items sell on Ebay?
This is a loaded question if there ever was one as almost anything has sold or can sell on the online auction site. However, fads come and go; while Beanie Babies were once hot, you now cannot give them away. And while some items in a particular category may sell online, not everything will. For instance, SOME coffee mugs sell well on Ebay. However, MOST coffee mugs do not.
In fact, the vast majority of things you find secondhand will not sell on Ebay, whether it is due to the product being in poor condition or just not being desirable to anyone. There is a lot of Made in China
junk out there; being a successful Ebay seller is all about learning how to find the few items that will sell among the vast amounts of merchandise that will not. This is a skill that takes time to develop, and even now, I still pick up duds that end up not being worth anything on Ebay.
In my first book and now in this one, I share my personal go-to items, which I have been picking up and reselling on Ebay for years. These are all realistic items that most anyone can find secondhand in their area. This is NOT a get-rich-quick book. This is a book filled with items that sell on Ebay anywhere from $10 to $100. None of these things are going to let you retire early, but selling a combination of them will definitely add to your bank account!
Every single item I list in this book is one I have personally sold. I provide you with a description of each item and what to look for, and in many cases, I also share what I originally paid (if I can remember!) and then what I sold it for. I also provide tips and tricks for listing as well as how to shipping.
Regardless of what you read in the following pages, however, it is up to you to do your research when listing anything for sale on Ebay. Conditions and prices are always changing, so be sure to do a completed listing search to see what an item recently sold for before pricing yours. Perhaps an item listed in this book may currently not be selling as well, or it might be going for much MORE than I made.
Bottom line: Always do your research! While the active Ebay listings show what buyers are ASKING for their items, the completed listings show what, if anything, they actually sold for. Items are only worth what someone is willing to pay!
On Ebay, it is not just about having the right items to sell, though. You need to have a keyword-loaded title, great photos (and lots of them!), a detailed description, and professional customer service policies. And after the sale has been made, you then need to package your merchandise and ship it out quickly. Take the time to do each step in the listing and shipping process correctly, and you will significantly cut down on customer complaints and returns, which in turn will keep you in good standing on Ebay so that you can continue selling.
It is essential to recognize the fact that Ebay is not YOUR business, but rather a TOOL you use in selling online. To make money on Ebay, you need to follow their policies and guidelines. And it really is simple: describe your items accurately, package them professionally, and ship them out quickly. The right items, plus great listings, plus excellent customer service, all add to you being a successful Ebay seller! And with the items listed in this book, you will be on your way to tackling the first requirement for making money on Ebay, which is to have sellable products.
And now, here are 101 MORE items that you can find at garage sales and thrift stores to resell on Ebay!
101 MORE ITEMS TO SELL ON EBAY
(In Alphabetical Order)
#1 ADVERTISING & PROMOTIONAL ITEMS
Have you ever been to a garage sale or thrift store and spotted a coffee mug with a product or company logo on it? Who would want such a thing?
you may have asked yourself. Well, plenty of people out there collect advertising promotional pieces, so these are always great items to pick up!
For example, I have sold a plush yellow duck advertising Duck brand packing tape for $15 as well as coffee mugs with corporate logos on them for $10. Products from companies no longer in business or that have undergone name changes are almost always fast sellers on Ebay. I have found Apple promotional pieces with the old Macintosh
name and logo on them that sold within minutes of me listing them.
I have also sold pens, pins, buttons, bags, hats, belt buckles, awards, and trophies branded with various corporate logos, in addition to plush toys and coffee mugs. Since these items only sell to particular buyers (usually not the people attending the garage sale they are being sold at), they are often the last items left on the last day of the sale. Therefore, I can usually pick up advertising pieces for as little as a quarter.
Do not think of these advertising items as things people will USE but instead as pieces that they COLLECT. Promotional products from brands and corporations are usually cheap to pick up, and they make great additions to your Ebay store. People are often searching for these items because their parents or they themselves worked there. So, you are selling a memory more than a functional product.
Ebay has an entire Collectibles
category on their site, which you can then narrow down into sub-categories, one of which is Advertising.
While the name of the company printed on the item you want to sell may not be in one of the subcategories (as an example, Coca-Cola
is a subcategory under Soda
; but there is also an Other
choice for pop brands not listed), try to narrow down your item as best you can into as many sub-categories as possible (i.e., Don’t just select Collectibles
and then Other
; try to find a subcategory it can be listed under).
As with everything I list on Ebay, providing multiple clear photographs is essential in getting top dollar. Since advertising pieces tend to have a small following, I list these at Fixed Price as there usually are not enough people who want them to bid them up at auction. Plus, it can sometimes take a while for the right buyer for these pieces to come along.
And since brands and companies are globally recognized, be sure to open up your listings to international buyers. Ebay’s Global Shipping Program makes selling to overseas customers a breeze. When an Ebay customer purchases something in the Global Shipping Program, the mailing address is automatically changed to that of Ebay’s processing center in Kentucky. You simply package the order as you usually would, and when Ebay gets the package, they will handle any relabeling or customs forms that are needed. And they also take responsibility for the package if it becomes lost or damaged.
#2 AIRLINE MERCHANDISE
Mugs, glasses, and bags from airlines, especially those that are no longer in business, are hot sellers on Ebay. Some people collect any type of aviation memorabilia, and folks who only pick up items from specific carriers. I have never been able to keep branded airline merchandise in my Ebay store for long as the items always get snatched up fast.
I have sold basic American Airlines coffee mugs for an easy $10 each, as well as an American Airlines teapot that was missing its lid for $10. I am always on the lookout for Pan Am items, especially the flight attendant's travel bags in the 1960s. I found one once, but it had been slashed to pieces. Seriously, someone took a KNIFE to it and cut it up. It broke my heart!
The reason airline merchandise sells well on Ebay is that it is pretty rare. Most pieces are only given to airline employees and are not available to the general public. Or they were serving pieces used in first-class or international flights, which meant someone likely swiped them from the plane.
Most airline merchandise is straightforward in design; china dishes are usually basic white with just the airline logo on them. While coffee mugs are the most common item to find, you also want
