The news: Amid rising concerns about the weakening economy, central bank members are signaling that further cuts to interest rates are likely.

  • Last Wednesday the Bank of Canada lowered rates for the third time in a row.
  • For its September 17-18 meeting, the US Federal Reserve is contemplating making its first interest rate cut since 2022.

Canada is well into its monetary policy easing cycle: The Bank of Canada set a new benchmark rate of 4.25% last Wednesday with another quarter-percentage point cut.
