If you're going to sell data, #Price is one aspect you need to nail from the outset. In my experience, the most important thing to understand is what value the data drives for various use-cases alongside & in conjunction with other inputs. In other words, don't be pricing your data like it's the flour in the bread recipe when it's really just the pinch of salt.

In an interesting discussion on Skills and Role Frameworks recently, we got into a debate as to how we create a data driven workforce. We all know that we want to get more from our data, but don't believe this is achieved by building big data functions! Instead we need to look at how we enable everyone across our workforce to have simple and easy access to data, the skills to leverage that data to answer the important questions and the accountability to ensure our data is created and captured to the highest quality standards. Traditional data career paths are changing, technology is constantly moving and the roles of today are unlikely to be the roles of tomorrow, to stay ahead, a whole company view of how we get the most from our most valuable asset will be key. #DataFabric #DataSkills #Data

Big day today in our data evolution journey as our Business Intelligence Cloud team enabled #UnityCatalog in our Tech Production #Databricks workspace. Months of planning & preparation with great support & guidance from Databricks to get this over the line, we now turn our focus to supporting other areas of the business to catalogue their data to an agreed standard, paving the way for true collaboration & sharing of data and models. A very important first step that lays the foundations for the exciting stuff to come where we can truly leverage #AI, #MachineLearning & #DataScience to find real insights in our data to drive our business forwards.

This increase is driven primarily by the rapid adoption of AI and the growing role data and technology play in business. To support this, organisations are placing more importance on skills relevant to these roles. What's there for me? This is your chance to accelerate your career and adapt to a changing job market. In my experience, Chief Data Officers (CDOs) and Data Leaders often excel in either business acumen or technical expertise, but rarely both. This division presents a significant challenge, as the role demands a seamless bridge between these two worlds. The Technical Expert Strengths: - Builds robust, reliable data infrastructure - Delivers high-quality solutions Challenges: - May struggle to align with business needs - Risk of misinterpreting business requirements - Can frustrate business stakeholders The Business Strategist Strengths: - Quickly grasps and prioritizes business objectives - Aligns data initiatives with organizational goals Challenges: - May underestimate technical complexities - Risk of degrading data reliability by accumulating technical debt - Can demotivate technical teams by deprioritizing infrastructure The Ideal: A Balanced Approach The most effective data leaders possess: - Strong communication skills to translate between technical and business domains - The ability to identify and address critical issues on both sides - Skills to gain buy-in from diverse stakeholders By bridging this gap, data leaders can ensure that technical solutions truly drive business value while maintaining a robust and scalable data foundation.

Keeping Things Simple ... ... is the way I like to do things. Don't over-complicate - very 'Occams Razor'. It's one of the reasons I joined Data Cubed as we align in terms of making sure systems, processes & solutions are the simplest version that ensures the desired outcome. Sometimes that's really tough. So many of the clients we work with want to be able to get reliable management information simply and quickly, but their current data infrastructure consists of a variety of disparate and disconnected sources making their process complicated and protracted. Something that can (should be) live and instantaneous can often take multiple days of effort. Does this resonate with you? ... having to spend an unreasonable amount of time every month producing management & board reports from various programmes, platforms & spreadsheets? I KNOW the majority of businesses find themselves in this boat - but don't know which way to row; how long it might take to reach land; how much effort it's going to take ir how much it's going to cost. Knowledge is power and developing an understanding of what it will take to be able to effectively and simply utilize the phenomenal amounts of data you have HAS to be worth it, right? My Strategic Pioneer There’s a lot of talk about data, data analytics and data driven strategies to boost business performance and improve personalised services for customers and clients. But I rarely have or hear conversations about the need to use AI, data insight and technology to specifically improve the Local Councils’ service provision to better meet the needs of members of the public from diverse communities. Well, this week I had a great meeting and conversation with a DEI focused corporate professional who is doing great work to change this😊 I refer to him as the Strategic Pioneer because he is bringing his passion for DEI advocacy to his corporate sales role and asking the difficult questions that most of us would probably feel uncomfortable to raise for fear of losing our job or being regarded as difficult……. So it’s Black Inclusion week and Esther McVey is questioning the value of DEI jobs in the Civil Service! Is the suggestion that such roles are no longer needed because equity and equality are utopian goals that are expensive to achieve? Or did she ask the question because she believes there is insufficient evidence to prove that DEI initiatives achieve long-term and sustainable change? So my question in return would be, if Civil Service spending is directed away from DEI initiatives what would that money then be redirected to? #blackinclusionweek #diversity #Inclusion #CivilService #Leadership
