GB milk production has continued to rise into November, with total milk production for the milk year to date surpassing last year. However, volumes remain below the '21 and '22 milk years. 💻 September Dairy Costings from Kingshay, just released, reveal milk yield per cow per day has increased by 0.4 litres compared to the previous year. Total milk production for September was up by 3.1%. Importantly, milk components have also improved. Fat% increased by 0.10 to 4.34%, and protein rose by 0.06 to 3.43%. These combined increases mean milk solids production for September was up by 5.3% compared to the previous year across the costed farms reported. 🍴 Feed use insights: Concentrate usage per cow was up by 0.5kg compared to the prior year. This aligns with Defra figures on compound and blend usage, supporting the national picture of milk production during this period. 🔍 Efficiency check: A 0.5kg feed increase should, in theory, provide energy for around 1 litre of milkᴬ. However, forage quality is likely limiting some of this marginal production. 🧮 Economic check: • Extra feed cost: 0.5kg at 30.5p/kg (£305/t) = 15.25p • Extra milk income: 0.4 litres at 42.83ppl = 17.13p • Extra margin: 1.88p/cow/day or £3.67/day across 195 cows in milk. 💷 Feed costs per litre are 11.81ppl. While feed costs per tonne have fallen by 9% the increased feed use means that the average purchased feed bill for September was close to last year's ('24 = £18,030 v '23 = £18,531). 🐄 The number of cows culled has fallen back in the last few weeks. It could well be there are some cows overdue to leave the herd which will level off milk production a small amount. 🐄 🐄 🐄 ᴬ Feed-to-milk calculation: 0.5kg × 90% DM = 0.45kg DM × 12.5MJ = 5.6MJ. Last week we had an interesting week in the dairy market with, again, significant activity, but without a significant change in prices. Most of the trades we brokered were at (or very close to) the price levels of the previous week. The EU is now past the expected French milk peak and the milk peak in NL/Germany is around the corner. So far the dairy market has been coping well with the additional milk. This week we even saw a slight recovery in the spot liquid prices. Meanwhile, the weather forecast in the EU is improving slowly and it seems the demand for fresh products and the food service industry is improving slowly with it. The spot market for almost every product feels very balanced and the need for sellers and buyers to think about Q3/Q4 seems equally low on both sides. So with a balanced market and without much pressure to make decisions, it seems our partners are ready for a break. In the next 2 weeks, we expect to see lower activity as most of our partners have plenty of bank holidays, and bridge days, in combination with school breaks. We will therefore be traveling ourselves in the next two weeks with no possibility to write updates. Our colleague Linda will be available to broker deals and inform our partners where possible about the changing dynamics if they occur.
