🏅 Could this be the new sport for Hartpury University and Hartpury College's Sports Academy?! It is certainly one I would love to watch and learn more about! #SpoGomi - a sport involving #litterpicking by teams of three. What's not to like?! 🗾 Originating in Japan, it is titled from an abbreviation of two words “Sport" and "Gomihiroi", meaning picking up trash. 🚮 You’re given a designated area of roughly 1.5 sq km (0.6 sq miles) and have to collect as much #litter as possible within an hour or so. This is genuine litter. Some items are awarded more points than others. Once collected, you have another 20 minutes to sort it into #recycling categories. The litter is then weighed. The team with the most points wins. 🧹 Not only do the teams win, but the places they host the competitions win too, receiving a very thorough clean-up! #WinWin 🏆 Whilst originating in Japan in 2008, the UK actually won the first #SpoGomi World Cup competition in 2023, with the second planned for October 2025. Preliminary competitions and national championships are now being planned in more than 30 countries, spanning six continents. What do you reckon? The next big sport for Hartpury? Sport England have launched their Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan, identifying 'Circular economy: supply chains, products and waste' as a priority theme. 'The Plan will promote and enable the recycling* (reuse) of sports clothing and equipment to benefit grassroots clubs and participants most in need', aswell as implement sustainable procurement policies and guidance in collaboration with their suppliers. Given that the volume of clothing and equipment waste involved is often an overlooked issue ( 🎾 54,000 tennis balls are used at Wimbledon each year, 🏏 1624 tonnes of cricket gear goes to waste every year) with most kit and equipment made from multi-components which do not biodegrade or cannot be commercially recycled it's great to see this as a key focus area. *there is a big difference between recycling and reuse, only 1% of textiles are recycled into new garments and recycling is not commercially viable for much of the mixed component equipment. Excited to see the Sport & Physical Activity sector highlighted in the latest LSIP report, particularly in Priorities 9 & 17. This recognition underscores the fantastic collaborative efforts happening across our region and the positive impact we’re beginning to witness through the work of the Devon & Somerset Local Skills Accountability Boards. Progress is being made, and it’s great to be a part of it! A new report published yesterday reveals that the Devon and Somerset Local Skills Improvement Plan is on track to deliver 20 key actions to boost future workforce skills. Since 2023, the LSIP team has been working with more than 700 employers and the region's colleges, universities, education providers and skills leads within local authorities to implement better ways of making sure employees are better equipped for the future of work. Climate Action is a Team Sport! No matter which county or country you come from, this is one key area where we must work together and collaborate as best we can with a common goal. And this is increasingly happening across the game. There is still so much to do - this is a huge challenge and still an existential threat for us. Youth Sport Trust CEO Ali Oliver said: At present, too many children and young people are inactive, with less than half meeting the amount of daily physical activity recommended by the UK’s Chief Medical Officers. This guidance provides school leaders with further insight into why being active is so important for the education and development of young people, and how they can unlock the potential of PE, school sport and physical activity within their school. UKSCA Accreditation There is the urban myth that the % of first-time pass rates for accreditation are a ploy by the UKSCA to make money out of potential future accredited coaches… I can attest that this is, as I suggest, just a myth. The biggest reason people fail elements first time is that they were underprepared. Being in an S&C role or studying certain other courses doesn’t necessarily prepare one for this assessment. Like anything, the assessment itself is specific and therefore requires specific attention to detail in order to pass. It’s designed to test knowledge & practice to ensure those who pass are indeed competent & skilled. We live in a time where you can pay for a course and expect to gain a certificate without much effort. If we allowed that to happen in a professional context such as Strength & Conditioning where at the top end of career potential you could be working with very elite athletes it would devalue our discipline. The process has to be set at a certain level to maintain professional standing. It can be challenging to receive negative feedback. Rather than blame the organisation though, looking inward yields better results for the future. What can you do to help improve your chances of passing accreditation? One suggestion I offer to others is attend the workshops, especially those linked to assessed elements (ie. Weightlifting, Plyo/Speed/Agility, Programming). This is where you can learn from UKSCA tutors directly. An analogy I quite like is, if you want to pass your driving test you can of course get lesssons from a friend or family member, but it’s unlikely they will know what it takes to pass the driving assessment. The best people to learn from in order to pass are instructors who have been trained in what’s required to pass the test. UKSCA accreditation is no different. If you want to know the best advice to help prepare for your assessment, speak to tutors (who are also assesssors) from the UKSCA. Rather than view the cost of the workshops as a drain, see it as an opportunity to learn exactly what’s required. You can never learn too much! They are also a great networking opportunity. It was through attending the workshops that I developed contacts with some of the assessors. That in part led me to where I am today! For more info check out the UKSCA website or drop me a message

Was delighted to deliver this to British Dressage Wales. Vanessa Archer and Nina Boex are super committed pioneers in wanting to help their young dressage riders manage key challenges. Presuppositions go ‘we get what we pay attention to’ or ‘what we pay attention to grows’, so whilst we explored the 6 key self identified issues in the initial brief, the talk focused more on what do we need more of? what underpins being able to manage/avoid/prevent these challenges in the first place?  …..#resilience #mentalhealth #beingok But imo, resilience is a boring sounding word especially to a young audience! Hence Tigger, and the quote, as I often do, grabbed their attention. Plus isn’t it better to focus on what we want/need [more of] rather than what we have/got? Then perhaps we are better positioned to manage life’s challenges, and bounce-back just like Tigger.

CALLING YOUTH ATHLETES IN BRACKNELL --- We are a new youth strength and conditioning facility, here in Bracknell, and we want to support the local sporting community. We specialise in training elite youth athletes from as young as 6-years old. S&C must be started at an early age to help athletes maximise athletic potential and give them the best chance of avoiding injuries on the field of play. This is not widely supported by the UK’s fitness industry, as most gyms won’t allow athletes access to resistance training if under 16. This is a big problem we see for our Ice Hockey players, as well as youth athletes of all sports. We started our facility in Bracknell to provide a safe space where the local young athletes can learn how to train and particpate in strength and conditioning. Resistance training is a skill that takes time to learn, our youth need to start as early as possible so they’re ready to excel when competetive sport intensifies in the years approaching senior play. --- Our youth S&C structure: •Training FUNdamentals (Ages 6-10) | The start of the strength & conditioning journey - Have FUN in the gym - Learn Fundamental movement patterns - Improve Resistance Training Skill Competency ____ •Learn to Train (Ages 11-14) | The resistance training education begins - Physically prepare to play sport - Learn the core barbell movements -Maximise training adaptations during rapid growth spurts ____ •Train to Compete (Ages 15+) | Physical preparation for the competitive climate - Physically prepare for high-level competition - Learn advance training techniques - Meet sports-specific strength/power standards --- For clubs and schools, we provide sports specific S&C workshops or private team S&C sessions so members of the club can train together. For individuals, why not apply to become a THS Academy member. Our classes range from athletes 6-18 and run 5 days per week of an evening/Saturday morning.
