At COMN, we don’t just study sports and fitness; we live and breathe them. We firmly believe that to truly understand the needs and experiences of the consumers we study, we must immerse ourselves in their world through observation, ethnography, and actively participating in the sports and activities we research. In one of our recent projects, we focused on court sport athletes and dove deep into the world of tennis. Our team took a step beyond the desk research by regularly watching, playing, and taking lessons to learn all of the intricacies and to better understand the unique needs and expectations of these athletes. By immersing ourselves in the culture of the sports we study, we gain firsthand insights into the challenges, preferences, and aspirations of these athletes. We strive to become experts in every field we explore, leveraging our firsthand experiences to inform and enrich our projects. Being a volunteer at the STWS - Sports Tech World Series event at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was one of the best experiences I’ve had in the last 2 years. As someone passionate about Sports Tech and AI, events like these are both exciting and inspiring. I’d like to extend a huge thank you to Johann Odou and Andrew Walton for making this experience possible and memorable. The Sports Tech World Series event was packed with technology insights, showcasing the future of sports through the integration of AI and data. The speakers provided invaluable perspectives on how tech is reshaping sports, offering insights into growth areas like analytics and global fan engagement. Connecting with industry leaders was a highlight— Edward Fitzgibbon shared insights on the explosive growth of cricket in the USA, while Molina Asthana GAICD from the Australia India Business Council shared about the partnerships driving growth between Australia and India via sports. Watching Lachlan Wills host with confidence was inspiring, showing me the impact of clear and engaging communication. The words "AI and data" came up time and again, reflecting why companies are investing heavily in these areas as foundational elements of sports tech. This event broadened my perspective on how sports, tech, and data come together and deepened my commitment to the field. A big thanks to the speakers, organizers, and fellow volunteers for making it an unforgettable experience in sports technology! What a great experience it was attending the SportNXT conference this week! I was privileged enough to be in the same room as, and speak to, many of the global industry’s leaders - gaining a valuable insight into sport’s upcoming developments and movements. Some key takeaways: •Women’s sport + men’s sport = “sport” is the goal … which can only be achieved through equitable access/treatment of both women’s and men’s. •Optimising fan experience is key … remember, it will always be someone’s first time at a game. •The rise of AI is exponential … the slowest rate of technology/AI growth is now. •Rich sports will get richer … lower-tier sports must pursue commercial opportunities that are unique to them, and not replicate the rich. •There is more competition for the attention of youth today … in 2011 16-44yo’s followed 2.5 sports, now they follow 7.5. I highly recommend this conference if you want to hear and speak to the best in the business, grow your network, and elevate your knowledge base!

It’s clear how technology is reshaping the world of sports, not just in performance and prevention, but also in tackling one of the biggest challenges: #mentalwellbeing. I had the chance to connect with some incredible minds, including Özgül DALKILIÇ and Ralph Wentz, who shared fascinating insights about the future of sports and tech. What stood out to me most is how sports can act as a mirror for resilience – where strength isn’t just physical but deeply tied to mental well-being. My biggest takeaway: Mental health in sports is still underestimated, yet it’s central to both performance and sustainability. By integrating technology, we have the chance to address this at scale – making mental well-being an active part of every athlete's journey, from grassroots to professional levels. I am very much looking forward to establishing the role of mentalport GmbH in the world of sports together with incredible supporters, among them Marion Reichel, Hannes Schwedhelm and Jan Rosenthal. SportEYE Methodology Our recent study employed a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to delve into the representation, perception, opinions, needs, participatory processes, learning, and impact evaluation of services and projects. We gathered data through individual interviews and focus groups, engaging 40 sports organisations from various countries. This included: - 6 online focus groups - 3 in-person interviews - 22 online interviews The focus groups aimed to explore sustainability perceptions, identify best practices, and evaluate the organisations' commitments to UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). If you don't ask, you don't receive. Late last year two sporting leaders Tim Klar & Emily Rosemond OLY had a vision... they saw a need and wanted to do something about it, so they did. The need: help SSOs and community #sport access the vast array of innovation, networks and sport tech opportunities unfolding in #Queensland. The problem to solve for, "How might technology help sporting groups achieve revenue resilience, increase participation, and maximise impact?" The solution: Bring the sport community together with innovation experts, industry, students and big tech to find new ways to #makemoney, #improve ways of working, and #createvalue for sport and all who play. Across the month of May #ICB in partnership with QSport & QUT (Queensland University of Technology) Sport will be running TWO all-day events. 1. An #innovation workshop next Thursday 16th May to explore what is needed and what is possible, with Wayne Gerard & Vibhor Pandey keeping the conversation focused on #revenue opportunities. 2. A #hackathon on Friday 31st May to form teams and pitch ideas.
