Having spent 14 out of my 19 years in iGaming working with Sportsbooks, I often engage in discussions with Operators on what are the most important points in order to maximise the success of a sportsbook ⚽📈 A lot has changed over the past 20 years in how sportsbooks are being managed, but in my opinion, these are the core principles to optimise your operations and drive great profitability: ◾ Data-Driven Insights I think this is a given, and not just for sportsbook. Without the right data, you cannot take the right decisions, especially when you have to price matches based on risk. ◾ Dynamic Odds Management This is a balancing act. On one hand you want to be competitive and within the market with your odds, on the other hand you need to keep an eye out for the accumulating risk. Brazil's regulatory landscape for online gambling is undergoing a significant shift with the introduction of a 15% tax on player winnings exceeding BRL2,824 (€508.05/$547.25). This tax will be applied at the source, meaning betting operators are now tasked with calculating and collecting these contributions before players receive their winnings. From the operator's perspective, the responsibility to collect and remit taxes adds administrative burdens and operational costs. Moreover, for consumers, the process of having taxes deducted directly from winnings could impact their overall gaming experience. It introduces potential confusion and dissatisfaction, as players may perceive it as an additional barrier to enjoying their winnings without clear understanding or transparency. This regulatory mandate in Brazil also raises broader questions about the feasibility and effectiveness of shifting tax collection responsibilities onto private entities in the iGaming sector. Curious to see how this will unfold.

Canada's Top Sports Betting Apps: Insights from the Last 12 Months 1. bet365 put the nitro boost on Last time I wrote about Canada, DK & FD were making serious ground on the global leader. But the Coates family have flicked the NOS switch & look to have number 1 sealed up for at least a few years. 2. theScore are sliding Penn's $2B media company is hard to figure out. The product gets excellent reviews, the brand is known, but it's sliding like a 1970's dance move. Not a great sign for ESPN optimists, as it runs on the same tech & has as similar media/brand model. 3. Fanduel, Bet365 & DraftKings dominate the Apple rankings The Big 3 run the trifecta for organic searches on almost every relevant term. If I'm looking for sports betting, why would I scroll past the first three search results with stronger brand awareness and better products, to download OLG Proline? Because I don't love myself? 4. 1xBet / BetVictor WTF Somehow, someway, these incredibly limited apps received 120k+ collective downloads annually. 5. Betway Group at #4 Another surprising result. However, at least these guys have compelling screenshots, assertive Apple Search Ads & a localized marketing effort. 6. BET99 Love their Canadian authenticity with GSP & Auston Matthews, but you'd love to see them challenge for #4. I’m often asked for my personal assessment of Google's new advertising guidelines for the German online gambling industry. My private answer is simple: they have had little to no impact overall. While some progress has been made, one issue is reduced at the cost of exacerbating another. We’ve implemented an effective market monitoring system using tools from Google and third-party services. I also maintain ongoing communication with competitors, affiliates, agencies, and market researchers. Based on this data, we can say the following: The number of Black-Hat PPC ads on Google has decreased significantly, returning to July levels after a surge in August and September. This is a positive trend but not enough to draw conclusions yet. We need to monitor the situation further, especially during the peak season in November and December. Since October, we’ve seen a sharp rise in black-market domains targeting German traffic. Organic search volume for illegal offers now surpasses legal offers. For example, searches for "online casino" show fewer Black-Hat ads in top positions. However, when legal offers do appear, the bonus offers are less attractive, leading to high bounce rates. As a result, organic search results are becoming more important. Users landing on illegal, unlicensed sites typically stay longer and convert better, whereas those landing on licensed sites often leave quickly with little to no conversion. Google's algorithm doesn’t distinguish between legal and illegal offers, meaning that the illegal sites are favored by stronger user signals (longer sessions and more conversions), while licensed sites suffer from higher bounce rates. This creates a negative feedback loop, further favoring the black market. While the drop in PPC ads reduces some traffic, the increase in organic traffic (which is cheaper than PPC) compensates for this. As a result, traffic to unlicensed offers continues to rise. Another issue is brand formation. There is measurable Direct Type-In (DTI) traffic, indicating that users who know a specific domain no longer need to use Google search. The black market, which cannot advertise its brand legally (unlike licensed operators who invest millions in brand marketing), is leading in this area. In conclusion, based on the data available, the overall impact of Google’s guidelines has been minimal, and immediate action is needed. Google must adjust its organic search algorithm to distinguish between legal and illegal offers, as it does in other areas. Furthermore, the Android Play Store should be opened to legal market apps. Allowing legal apps on the Play Store could help correct the current imbalance, support channelization efforts, and open new revenue streams for Google, as the legal market already advertises on Apple’s iOS Store.

Once dominated by the financial industry, we continue to see further investment in local sports by companies within the betting industry.
