🌟 Finance Transformation: From Strategy to Execution 🌟 What an exhilarating experience it was to co-host the "Finance Transformation: From Strategy to Execution" workshop at the EY "AI: Beyond the Hype" event, alongside two titans of industry transformation, Hussain, Transformation Lead - Business Group Europe at FrieslandCampina, and Vladimir, Finance Business Manager at Microsoft. Hussain kicked off the session with a deep dive into the finance transformation journey, offering sage advice and practical guidance for companies embarking on this pivotal path. His insights set the stage for a comprehensive understanding of the transformation process. I had the opportunity to share our approach to building an AI-Ready data platform, showcasing our recent success with cashflow forecasting. This use case highlighted the efficiency gains achievable in finance functions when leveraging Microsoft's cutting-edge technology. Vladimir then provided a fascinating look into how Microsoft applies their own AI tools internally to revolutionize their finance operations, offering a unique perspective from a tech giant that practices what it preaches. The workshop was a hive of engagement, culminating in a dynamic Q&A session where the audience's enthusiasm and inquisitive questions underscored the success of our event. I am immensely grateful to Hussain and Vladimir for their invaluable contributions and for taking the time to share their expertise with us at EY Wavespace. "If the business case doesn’t stack up because of the cost of computing or training the models, then we’re not going to see the impact of AI on business activity that many people anticipate.” Indeed. With many companies still in the experimentation stage of AI, cost of compute has not yet become a material issue to manage. But it's definitely coming. Executives expect cost of computing will climb 89% between 2023-25 according to a recent report by the IBM Institute for Business Value. And 70% cite GenAI as a critical driver of this increase. Solving this will be a critical competency. And it requires a multi-faceted approach: - Ballparking potential AI / compute costs during the planning / ideation stage - Multi-model AI development, with broad use of smaller, more efficient models - Improving coding efficiency (using GenAI), with an eye on managing compute and energy consumption - Building AIOps capabilities to intelligently route requests to the the most efficient model - Being more proactive with regard to Hybrid Cloud / compute - Using AI in ITOps and FinOps to monitor and manage costs (And probably a half dozen others that require more technical chops than I possess) As these costs increase, it will become an issue that moves beyond the CIO / CTO office, escalating to the CFO, COO, and CEO. "Any app, any website, can be turned into a full multi-modal conversational canvas." This kind of product purchase path may well happen AND I would go further to say that many future product selections will be done by people at home or on the move, solely by speaking with their own personal AI rather than visiting any websites directly. I've already found myself exploring product details and options via ChatGPT 4o and the edges of this capability are clearly visible. Around a year back I posted the idea that your next customer may well be an AI agent. We're now one step closer to this reality ... something to think about!
