When we press the excitement button, we get productivity game-changers like Generative Extend in Adobe Premiere. Then there’s the ‘existential worry’ button (which has to be large to fit all those feelings). After spending a few hours with some ideation experiments in DALL-E last night, I’m amazed at how quickly AI image generation works, but there’s still that lingering sense of ‘negative discombobulation,’ as in ‘that would have taken me days to make that image,’ coupled with the ‘nope, that’s not what I’m imagining, AI person, why can’t you see what’s in my head??’ Despite my years of professional experience, I can’t shake the feeling when using AI image and motion tools, especially when it comes to my own creative process. It makes me wonder about the human journey in creativity – that sense we have, as visual storytellers, of just knowing when something is right. AI isn’t there yet, but the thought that it might one day ‘see what’s in Mike’s head’ does give me hope, and maybe I won’t need to press the ‘existential worry’ button so hard about the humanity of creation getting swamped by the sheer amount of AI imagery tools that are appearing in this new frontier. But back to the main point: these new Adobe tools are fantastic. From a production perspective, Adobe’s AI products have always been rooted in the commercial artist space, so they avoid the potential copyright issues we’ve seen with other AI tools. This year has seen some soul searching here at Halo . After 20 years of continuous improvement, we are always looking for ways to grow. So we have been asking ourselves some very big questions – like why do clients come to Halo? What they are seeking from us? What do we really offer? Next year is going to see some changes, specifically in how we define and articulate the real value that we bring to the table. It is going to see changes in how we work and how we achieve the outcomes that we’re always aiming for clients, and that define our success. But we also know this is larger than Halo. This is an industry shift. This is a refocusing of what you’re actually buying from a brand agency. Which is why it is so good for me to read this article by our close neighbours Taxi Studio and Spencer Buck in Design Week . As brand agencies, we need to be thinking about how we talk about and deliver our work. And there is so much sense spoken in this article. So, I’d like to wish Taxi all the best in their new home (although it does mean you’ll be a little further away from us now). And I would like to encourage other leading brand agencies to really make the time to think about what the future of our industry might look like. I've spent some time getting to grips with #Midjourney (image generation) and #LumaDreamMachine (a transformer model that creates video from image/text generation) and put together this short edit of what 1950's Paris might've looked like according to AI. There's been so much talk of "AI taking our jobs" over the past couple of years but now that I've spent some time learning how to use it, to me it's simply becoming another tool that we can harness to produce results. Editing in the future will probably involve a lot more focus around prompting image/video generation, similar to coding in a way. That being said, learning how to effectively prompt to get the results I wanted was very frustrating which is why everyone in this video ended up wearing sunglasses. It was a Parisian looking solution to a crazy AI faces and eyes problem. What are your thoughts about AI sites like Midjourney/Luma? Is it worth the hype or are you not really phased by it? How are you using AI in your creative work? Have you heared about Adobe's new AI feature? Adobe's Generative Extend allows you to add frames to the beginning or end of a video clip. Also, you can click and drag the end of a dialogue clip to extend the ambient “room tone” underneath to smooth out audio edits. You can even extend sound effects that are cut off too early.
