As we embrace generative AI, are we ignoring its potential environmental costs? A recent survey shows that 83% of UK adults are familiar with the technology, and just over half are concerned about the environmental impact of generative AI. 54% of those aware of genAI see its potential harm to the environment, and 19% don’t trust providers to manage this responsibly. In addition, 35% think AI tools should show environmental impact warnings, and 45% back laws for more transparency on AI’s effects. With genAI requests using ten times more electricity than a Google search and power demand expected to rise by 70% each year until 2027, these worries are significant. AI virtual assistants are transforming the way we live and work, but we must carefully consider the balance between convenience and privacy. In my recent interview with Silicon UK, I shared insights on the evolving role of AI and the importance of user awareness when it comes to data handling. At Swift Innovation Lab, our AI Personalized Assistant concept not only showcases how design bridges technology and user-friendliness but also underscores the need for transparency and trust in data use. I signed up and selected my interest areas from the post below, but started receiving emails about all topics. I contacted them about this but was told I'm unable "to select specific issues to only receive emails about." 🤔 That's a curious case of tailoring. Done right, selecting topics of interest is great for your email marketing. It not only reduces unsubscribe rates – as people only get what they're interested in – but it gives you a gauge of what's important to your audiences. For marketers that could be to understand content requirements. For a mayor, that could be to see what's important to voters for campaigning purposes.
