The UK Business Angels Association has analysed new research undertaken by the Angel Investment Network (AIN), which reveals that only 44% of startups say they have ‘a good understanding’ of the fundraising process when dealing with investors. The survey of over 200 startups also shares some insights into founder expectations including: 🕰 Over 50% of startups that had previously raised investment said it took them longer than expected 💰 Nearly 40 % said the funds ran out sooner than they had anticipated 🚨 Over 40% have recently reduced their fundraising targets due to challenging market conditions The findings also reveal current priorities among startups looking to raise including securing more investment, finding the right talent, and product innovation. Businesses who have raised successfully were also questioned about the factors which led to their investment, with profitability cited as the top driver, followed by scalability, personnel, and revenues. Despite the challenges on raising funding, nearly 70% of those surveyed said they are optimistic about the next 12 months. The UK's Scale Up mission is incredibly important to it's continued relevance on the world stage. However, the #westmidlands tech ecosystem does not have a significant community of #scaleups and by focussing the limited capital available on a geographically irrelevant strategy we are potentially starving #startups of the capital they require. Ironically, this is likely to perpetuate the existing dearth of scaling businesses.

This £17 million loan from UK Infrastructure Bank (UKIB) to West Suffolk Council for its net zero programme shows how local councils can support small projects below the UKIB's £5 million transaction minimum by packaging them in an overall programme of work. UKIB lends to local authority projects at gilts + 40 basis points. Interestingly, one of the projects in West Suffolk's portfolio of decarbonisation projects is its "Solar for Business" solar leasing scheme, which installs rooftop solar for free, reducing carbon emissions while saving the businesses money. Plus, the council makes a small surplus that it uses to support other projects. These solar leasing arrangements are helpful in overcoming a number of obstacles for property owners considering solar installations: upfront cost, long payback, vendor/product selection, project risk and complexity, ongoing maintenance. They are mostly applied to larger projects, but the residential sector is growing in some global markets. How much do households spend per retrofit? Average retrofit spend per household is not proportionate across tenure, according to a report by the National Retrofit Hub (link in comments). This suggests energy performance uplift varies by tenure. Here’s the data: Private rental: £𝟮,𝟲𝟬𝟬/𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 Delivery data difficult to access, but annual spend illustrates less effective intervention install compared to other tenures. -> Improved measurement & more comprehensive retrofit required.
