I sometimes get asked by clients how much budget they should allocate to their media spend. My answer? What do you want to achieve with it? Are you happy to just have leads in your CRM, that you can then nurture/talk to and who may or may not convert down the line? Are you looking for brand awareness and people talking about you? If it's revenue, then you need to understand your conversion funnel and work backwards. For example: - Budget Allocation: You have a £5k budget for Google Ads. - Impressions: This budget gets you 10,000 impressions. - Click-Through Rate (CTR): Assuming a 10% CTR, you get 1,000 clicks. - Cost Per Click (CPC): With a £5 CPC, those 1,000 clicks use up your £5k budget. - Conversion Rate: If 5% of those clicks convert, that gives you 50 leads. These 50 leads are just the starting point. The crucial next step is your follow-up funnel. 'Marketing secrets of the pub lunch' There are plenty of things that separate good marketing copy from bad. But one that’s often overlooked is confidence. When you’ve got it, you write better. A bit of confidence helps you run with stuff that’s personal to you and what you’re selling. And when you do that, it singles you out - as you avoid bland, cliché-filled copy. As ever, examples are better than my blabbering, so consider this: On holiday a while back, as we pootled around the Suffolk countryside in the rain, I saw a couple of pub chalkboards advertising lunch. One said this: ‘We cook the finest ingredients and are passionate about our food and our service.” Zero confidence – two whopping clichés and nothing to set them apart from anyone else. The other said this: ‘Pop in for one of Val’s famous homemade pies – you’re lucky, you’ve caught her on a good day!’ Now (if I hadn’t already stuffed my face with fish and chips) which pub would I choose? The second, of course – the copy singles the place out, as you’re not gonna get Val’s homemade pie anywhere else. Especially as it’s one of her good days (nice bit of FOMO). And it promises charm and personality, as opposed to the grim functionality of a place that’s ‘passionate about food’. You see, when you write with confidence you have the guts to say things that others don’t. I met a prospective client who was complaining about not getting any results even though they kept paying monthly billings. I just asked for their GMB and website link. I looked at the GMB; everything looked normal there. Then I went straight to their website and opened 3-4 service pages. Without any other analysis, I could clearly see what the problem was. Well, the problem is, I searched their service names on Google to see the Google-suggested keywords for those specific services. and there are many potential keywords available. but I see none of the service pages are targeting those potential keywords. They just added the title directly without focusing on the keywords suggested by Google, and H titles are almost generic. Long-content, internal links are fine, but all those pages have no keywords that Google suggested for those services. Now tell me, is it really possible when your competitors are already focusing on the best and potential keywords and ranking at the top of the search, and you have no idea what keywords you're focusing on? Even some keywords aren't matching the user intent. So the first thing their SEO provider didn't do was analyze the keywords, and they're doing lots of backlinks, posts, and other activities while keep billing them. The client asked them why they don't see results, and the SEO provider answered: "You have some extra plugins on your website, and you have to remove them; then we will see the result." Holy cow, seriously???? And the client told me that's a very popular company; how can I doubt them? I just told him, someone's popularity isn't going to rank your keywords. Then I just took some screenshots and showed him what I see. Now he understands everything, and hopefully, we will onboard him this week (multi-location client).

When I ran my SEO Made Simple course earlier this year one person told me her business coach had said "not to bother blogging" because her website was built with a website builder and therefore wouldn't rank. This is an absolute load of rubbish! Unless you are in a highly competitive environment it won't make the slightest difference (and even if you are then it still probably won't make a difference) But just one example of things that small business owners get told (and believe) about SEO. Are your leaders screaming 'we need more thought leadership' content? I can tell you what not to do: have your SMEs write blog posts about what interests them and then promoting them on social. 😫 SMEs don't usually like to write, SMEs are busy, and blogging without guidance and purpose amounts to random acts of content. Someone can be a SME but not a thought leader. But it’s hard to be a thought leader if you aren’t some level of SME. To level-up your thought-leadership game I would: 🔹 Get a handle on what interests your buyers (often by interviewing sales + customets) and find leaders who can speak to that. Subject first, then the person. 🔹 Find SMEs who are expert, yes, but who also have an opinion, and who want to participate publically in your content. (Participate, not own). 🔹 Find contract writers to ghost write for them (because SMEs always have a day job they need to be doing instead) 🔹 Go through their old content (usually lots of researched-based white papers and webinar or conference recordings) to see what could be repurposed 🔹 Interview them and spin content out of it including blog posts, videos, social carousels, and longer-form content This is doable but takes time and is harder to do than typical ‘what is’ blog content. But it makes people trust that your people can solve their business problems.

I rank assets for none other than demonstrating ability. If I am honest - over the years I've ranked for everything from SEO agency to SEO services, SEO specialist to SEO Consultant. In all honesty, LinkedIn brought me 10x worth of business over ranking (AND MUCH BETTER QUALITY BUSINESS!!!!!) Today I noticed post a LOT of SERP volatility that I've got sitelinks and my knowledge panel together. It won't (or is highly unlikely to bring me business) BUT, it's a proof of concept. Now - if I could teach anyone ANYTHING it would be that the BEST SEOS out there are usually not well known - they're underground building assets, ranking and flipping em. From my own experience and from those that I know who are good - it all comes down to focusing on common sense, maintaining a consistent approach to building quality and testing. Don't listen to what Google says. Don't listen to third party advice without running your own tests and drawing conclusions. Google's lost a lot of cred in the last year and quite frankly, their obscurity, lack of transparency and NGAF attitutde towards smaller businesses means - YOU TOO should start focusing on multi-faceted strategies. The marketing you do to your customers after buying is just as crucial as the marketing efforts before they make a purchase. The marketing you do to your customers after buying is as important as the marketing you do prior to them buying. Many brands I speak to put a lot of energy into getting people 'over the line' to buy but then go ghost once the purchase has been made. Peer Review... 🕵‍♂️ I usually post about marketing strategy - today, after a week of cramming 5 work days into 4, it’s a perfect time to create a post about the importance of quality and how peer review supports that. Our agency is driven by senior marketers. Double checking and re-reading our output has been ingrained in our professional way of working for donkey’s years! But we’re all human and fallible to the odd oversight, this is where you need a strong team to have your back and the importance of peer review. We use peer review in a few ways: 🤔 Does my approach make sense? ✔ Have I nailed my execution? 🔍 And is there anything I’ve missed? The creative industry is subjective but also has structure and a methodology that’s followed in our agency - delivering output to the level we need. So when we’ve had a ‘crunching’ week, our customers don’t see an impact on quality. Missing links, spelling mistakes, wrong brand colours etc etc…. Our peer review process leads to tighter customer feedback loops, more content hitting the mark first time, and the ability to keep-up with the content cadence the digital world demands today!
