*** Kia NERO EV experience for 12 months *** Seeing all the bad press on EV i wanted to give my 10,000 mile review - note I am a serious petrolhead and have worked in the Automotive events and dealer network sector for 15+ years - as a Digital signage provider and rollouts in UK & Europe to our AirshroudbyCX handoverbay reveal systems in 37 countries - but plugs aside back to EV As i did the AV Rollout for KIA Motors over the last 5 years in Italy, Netherlands, Slovakia and UK - I felt loyal to the brand and purchased top of the range a 23 plate KIA Nero EV - after 12 months and nearly 10,000 miles I couldnt fault a single thing with the car (apart from really poor reversing in the dark with a reversing camera which gets dirty and water on it at a second driving down the road so you cant see a thing) The cost to run - 1st it was purchased thru my company so 100% Tax deducted - so that will offset deprecation a bit but we wont go in to that politics on this post :) It did an average of 230 miles per charge the cost at home to charge was 7p/KWH so no more than £3-£4 to full charge it - when i had to put a charge in at the services it was 80/Kwh and 15 min charge got it to 80% and cost £24 ish. Luckily managed to charge at home most of the time - so at a guess i would say 10,000 miles (circa 41 charges) cost me an estimated £450 for the year Front tyres near levels needing replacement soon so £200 Full warranty and service included - £0 So its cost £650 + vehicle depreciation - The car cost £42k (less tax relief cost approx £35k) Autotrader have similar listed for £29k - so its so far £6k depreciation year 1 - which isnt bad really The experience of the EV charge network is the problem if you dont / cant have a home charger - our town has 4 charge points for 15000+ residents The motorway network was getting better but so many out of order or only slow chargers - apps direct you to one and wrong app, cant use etc - became frustrating at times. KIA's own Charge app directed to private ones in schools and behind gates - totally pointless. Other than the occasional issue in the initial months on chargers - I have to say big thumbs up year 1 !! Get one with a heatpump and heated seats - the range didnt drop much on the KIA in winter. Oh and finally nowhere does the sales patter say, you will end up buying a cake and a coffee whilst charging so EV's will make you fat :)

SmartView Convenience (SVC) is our retail epos market read of 5,000+/- wholesaler supplied GB independent convenience stores with incredible levels of sku, brand, sub category, category and main department data. (Current data is reporting up to 6th October 2024). EPOS records what gets bought. EPOS cant quantify lost or unfulfilled purchase intentions. It is therefore more than a bit eye opening to learn that 15% of shoppers in an independent convenience store (almost 1-in-6 shoppers) fail to buy an intended item when in the store, latest TWC convenience shopper research reveals. There are a variety of reasons which cause failed purchases (often simple reasons) which we at TWC Group will be exploring in the coming months. While the sector is under pressure (just look at SVC sales data) at least shopper demand is outstripping current retail sales. We (the sector) should work together to optimise ranges and deliver against shoppers' needs in 2025 (a win/win/win/win for shoppers/retailers/wholesalers/suppliers). Shop price data out today..... During the height of the cost of living crisis, retailers invested heavily in improving their operations and supply chains to compensate for the impact of global shocks on input costs. This is clearly paying off, with shop prices having risen just 0.2% over the past 12 months. Food inflation is now lower than any time since 2021 helped by falling prices for key products such as butter and coffee. Meanwhile, non-food prices went deeper into deflation as retailers tried to drive sales by discounting. This was particularly true for TVs with great deals to capitalise on the Euros fever.    Whoever wins Thursday’s election will benefit from the work of retailers to cut their costs and prices, easing the cost of living for millions of households. The last few years should serve as a warning that where business costs rise significantly, consumer prices are forced up too. The next Government must address some of the major cost burdens weighing down the retail industry, including the broken business rates system, and inflexible apprenticeship levy. By doing so, retailers can invest in lower prices for the future – helping to reduce the cost of living pressures that many families face. Kingfisher plc have published their Q3 results for the period ending 31 October 2024. Here’s the key points:- - Group sales at £3.2bn, -1.1% on like for like basis, reflecting continued weak demand in UK and France. - UK & Ireland £1.6bn - growth driven by Screwfix +1.8% LFL and TradePoint UK +4.9% LFL. B&Q -0.6% LFL. - Core sales resilient, big ticket showing some signs of improvement and seasonal still impacted by poor weather. - In France total sales £967m, -4.3% LFL although showing improvement from Q2. Asda expanding Exceptional is a broadly sensible move. Driving margin, point of difference etc. But it's evocative of Tesco 2013. They revamped Finest with the block signage and highlighting of it everywhere. The challenge is that it impacts price perception. You have to be so careful, Tesco can do that now as their price perception is strong. Almost can "treat" yourself due to the low prices; Aldi match etc. Then Finest becomes "aspirational." The challenge for Asda is that another message alongside Aldi/Lidl match (one of the most challenged campaigns ever), Low price lock, Cashpot loyalty, Joe Wicks Cashpot for Schools plus the branded messages absolutely everywhere..... Just overloads the customer and achieves nothing. The Asda customer is price sensitive and highlighting premium in ordinary times would be a refreshingly different as a message. Alongside their relentless pricing message. But in the current environment; I am concerned that it'll alienate more customers in search of value, as the prices for premium product are naturally higher by default. As Buyers, we are sometimes used to having the “red carpet” rolled out for us when we visit our supplier’s sites - especially in China. Today, my team and I did a role reversal. Three key members of OTL’s biggest supplier from China came to visit us in our customer support centre in Leeds. The supplier in question have been partners to us for 20+ years. It was important that we treated them as such - *partners*. From doing their visa invitation letters to picking them up from their hotel and introducing them to the whole business and giving them a full site tour, then taking them to visit many of our customer’s stores and an informal evening meal, we made them feel like true partners. The CEO and MD dedicated their entire morning sitting with them and telling them about our future plans for growth and how they can play a fundamental part in helping us on that journey. Those three people will return to China with a much better understanding of not just our business, but also those of OTL’s customers and I have no doubt this will only drive positive results for all concerned in the future. Partnership is a mutual thing - buyer/supplier relationships that are one sided seldom succeed. Today I am asking for a favour on a Friday. Paper Tiger is a member of the Greetings Cards Association (GCA), which represents businesses right across our sector of industry, from retailers like us, the card publishers, and the paper manufacturers. This year our industry has been focused on the Royal Mail proposals for reducing their Universal Service Obligation to deliver the post six days a week. Our whole industry implicitly understands how important it is to be able to send and receive cards. The GCA has plenty of data and analysis to back that up, and as an industry we have made our #cardmitment to protect the postal service, and also ensure that you can post your cards reliably, and at a fair price. Last week we sent out a survey to our database asking for feedback on use of the Royal Mail, different types of stamps, and the Universal Service Obligation. We have had a really strong response from customers, and I would like to add some more information and feedback from a wider group of people - my contacts on LinkedIn. I would be really grateful if you could spend a few minutes completing this survey. There are lessons to be learnt here. Simple price cutting and quantity shifting does not equal a sustainable and profitable organisation. Digitalisation is a vital and indeed critical step to business succession in todays landscape, but once again this too must be rigoursly tested to ensure all the correct procedures and steps are in place to safeguard both the customers and supplier relationships.

How are UK retailers managing to shrug off Budget uncertainty? Retail sales rose solidly in September, with total sales values up 2.0% year-over-year, an improvement from August’s 1.0%. Like-for-like sales also exceeded expectations, growing 1.7%. Drier weather and robust real wage growth helped boost sales volumes. The average Q3 gain of 1.2% outpaced the H1 average of 0.4%, indicating a strengthening retail sector. With the BRC shop price index dropping by -0.6% in September, these value gains will likely translate into more substantial volume growth.
