I've seen a lot of discussion about how the retail EV share of the new car market is better than the official SMMT figures suggest because consumers are using salary sacrifice schemes to buy EVs. However, if that was the case, I think you'd expect the fleet/business share of EV registrations to be even higher.

Andy Webb , head of sales for valuations platform Brego, told the VRA’s September meeting that fleet dominance of the EV market meant there were too many medium and large electric cars entering the remarketing cycle, and not enough smaller ones for everyday buyers. The meeting also heard from Martin Miller, founder of dealer EV Experts Ltd, who argued that there were reasons for optimism. Our Market View identifies how the average price of a used car increased in April for the first time this year, following a succession of monthly dips. Prices averaged £16,964, a month-on-month rise of 1% (or £146), but down 9% year-on-year from £18,564. BEV market growth continues The UK new car market rose by 2.5% in July with electrified vehicles dominating demand, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Electrified vehicle demand outpaced the overall market, accounting for four in 10 (42%) new cars registered in the month. Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) uptake increased by 31.4% to achieve a 14.5% market share, while plug-in hybrids (PHEV) grew 12.4% to take 8.9% of registrations. Battery electric vehicle (BEV) volumes were up 18.8%, resulting in an overall market share of 18.5%, around 3.5% below the mandated zero emission target for 2024. There was an uptick in aggregate new vehicle sales figures in July 2024, prompting automotive business council, naamsa, to suggest this could be the turning point for an improved second semester performance. UK car manufacturing output declined by 11.9% to 69,652 units in May, according to new figures published today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Production for the UK market rose by 9.7% to 17,754 units but did not offset a 17.4% decline in volumes for export, at 51,898 units. Despite the fall, almost three quarters (74.5%) of all cars built in Britain were exported to global markets, with more than half (52.5%) going to the EU followed by the US (18.2%) and Turkey, which took 8% of shipments.
