When #Consistent Collections got switched to #Simpler Recycling last year, we were all told it was because people didn’t want seven different bins in their business or home to collect waste.   ...'The 7 deadly Bins'...'Seven bins Sunak'... And whilst that was never the plan anyway, its good to see another piece of the policy puzzle dropping into place today. The devil of course will all be in the detail - and its crucial that #pEPR clicks together with this as cleanly as a proverbial puzzle as we progress. For example, if there is subsequently material listed in Simpler Recycling that is not yet practically or effectively recycled, will the pEPR modulation fees reflect that? And with Retailers given a 2-year adoption window for mandatory labelling, with a drop dead date of 1st April 2027, what happens if its recyclability status changes in the mean time? Victorian engineers built things to last! However, over 120 years later, many wastewater syphons (which carry wastewater under rivers) have been left under-maintained. With climate change bringing more rainwater into the wastewater network, these neglected syphons are increasingly causing spills into Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) and subsequently into our rivers, streams, and waterways. Maintaining syphons is a crucial step in increasing hydraulic capacity and improving water quality in our rivers. #ESG #rivers #waterindustry #environment #pollution

The Environment Secretary, Steve Reed devoted over half of his short allocated speech-time at the labour party conference yesterday to the water industry and more importantly to his current perception of the industry. https://lnkd.in/epW_egmH He started with “Our rivers and seas are polluted” and “Our once-pristine waterways are overflowing with raw, toxic sewage”. Then, unsurprisingly he blamed the last Government for their bonfire of regulations that led to abuses in water regulation. Specifically he said “The Conservatives just stood back and watched as raw sewage polluted our rivers and customers' money was funnelled into multimillion pound bonuses and dividend payments while our sewage system crumbled”. He then outlined his priorities in dealing with the current situation by promising to fix the foundations and clean up the waterways. He said that “money ringfenced for investment will be spent on fixing broken water infrastructure and refunded to customers if it's not” and promised to “… ban the multimillion pound bonuses water bosses paid themselves for overseeing repeated illegal sewage dumping” and promised to give Ofwat more teeth to prosecute polluters. Interestingly he linked the investment needed to fix the broken sewage system with creating good, well-paid jobs in every single part of our country, something some of us have been calling for for years. Overall, there was nothing new but it seems that Steve Reed is determined not to be distracted by populist governance changes. He will depend on Ofwat to demand the improvements required through a tough PR24 determination and then to oversee (with teeth) the privatised water industry and its supply chain to deliver what will be the biggest water capital programme ever. Interesting times indeed.

The National Audit Office has issued its report on progress with the statutory BNG scheme, a report which echoes many of the concerns raised by consultants, clients and Local Government. The words "Defra does not yet" feature repeatedly and its conclusions on a functioning market, on monitoring, on local authority capacity for enforcement and on #DEFRA leadership of the scheme do not make for a comforting read. In contrast to the typical bloat of most BNG documents, there is a succinct 11 page summary and the full-fat main report is only 40 pages. Worth a read.
