🤔 Where do I draw the line? At this December's Coaching Ethics Forum (CEF) conference, I will speak on the topic of 'Ethical considerations when coaching for mental health and wellbeing'. 👀 Coaching is becoming a popular tool for the promotion and protection of mental health and wellbeing, despite mental health challenges in clients being more frequent than untrained and ill-informed coaches may believe. This might pose a serious risk when a client presents with mental illness and is at risk for self-harm and suicide. As a result, coaching practitioners need to be aware of these challenges within clients and know how to appropriately respond. 🗺 By applying the ethical principles for mental health into their practice, coaching practitioners can enhance client welfare, navigate the boundaries between coaching and therapy, and explore where they fall on the continuum of coaching for mental health and wellbeing. 🤝 This session will discuss the importance of a network around the practitioner, such as supervision. I will also introduce some tools that can help both individual and collective reflection around clients’ mental health and the appropriate course of action that includes a systemic-biopsychosocial perspective and evidence-based approach. Great catching up with Kayleigh Robinson, MCIPD, old friends and colleagues and lots of new faces too at the CIPD conference yesterday! I particularly enjoyed Eerika Hedman-Phillips talk on what makes a line manager? I really liked how she kept her talk real, explaining that there is no silver bullet or recipe for success for managers whilst they sit in a critical role. Whilst the world of work is continuously changing, we sometimes expect managers to be a finished article, but there are practices that can help them. Her research looks at the 3 R’s for managers thriving with their teams… Reflexivity, Resonance and Resilience. RESONANCE - relationships and conversations are a fundamental part of leadership and management. Managers show curiosity to their teams to help them feel like they matter and are valued - they need to REALLy listen - there are no short-cuts! The focus here is on relating effectively with team members. REFLEXIVITY - managers taking responsibility and being curious about their impact on others to help them make conscious choices. This includes the art of asking really good questions to challenge thinking. RESILIENCE - managers need to continuously learn and evolve to move forward. Being humble and comfortable with the not knowing. Knowing your purpose and values is important for manager’s self-awareness. I liken quite a few of these points with coaching - listening, holding the space, building trust, showing curiosity and fostering critical thinking. How are you seeing this play out in your organisation?
