These people are children, parents, friends, partners, siblings and grandparents. Coping with someone you love experiencing these problems can cause physical, mental, emotional, social and financial distress. Substance use or gambling are often just one part of the story – so many also suffer mental ill health, domestic abuse and financial problems. They may be afraid to speak out so they are hidden in plain sight. Adfam gives them a voice. More than five million people are affected in this country and we know how tough it can be, so we want to make their lives better. Our vision at Adfam is that family members affected by substance use or gambling are heard, valued and have access to support; that’s why we do what we do. I usually take the media headlines with a reasonable pinch of salt, however sometimes the potential impacts to my clients and my business make some worthy of taking notice. Almost all of my UK web design clients have their websites hosted on my own dedicated UK-based server. That means I have, through my provider support, full control over that server. After seeing headlines in recent days about Russian cyber attack threats towards the UK, whether spin or truth, I double-checked the server firewall settings to be sure that any IP addresses originating in Russia are blocked. And they were - and to my knowledge, have been for many years, alongside several other countries where cyber attacks frequently originate. All of this is on top of underlying brute force attack protection. You can never 100% guarantee security - but you can put as much in place as feasibly possible to ensure the risk is addressed and reduced. It's why we have hardware firewall security before our server is even accessed. Then operating system-level firewalls at server level. Firewall software running on every single website. 24/7/365 monitoring software linked to every single website. 3-way backups running for every single website. I can't ethically do this any other way - and it's all part of the support and hosting we include with every website we create and support (aside from those outside of the UK where local hosting is more appropriate).

What does good graphic design look like? Whilst observing the rise of design apps and online tools, design has certainly become more accessible. It got me thinking, what does good graphic design look like? As a graphic designer our main role is solving communication problems whilst delivering a message. We are clever thinkers and don’t just do what looks good. We are trained in the psychology of design and have valid marketing objectives for our creations. 💭Outside the Box Thinking We won’t always do what we are told! But advise what is the best approach for good results. Our creativity means we are fresh thinkers and deliver impact. ✔️Brand Consistency We are great at sticking to rules. I’m delighted to have been commissioned to write for the next issue of ‘Centrum’ the @PSMGLLP magazine. I’ll be turning my attention to -  Canva: The good, the bad and the ugly Canva is widely recognised for its user-friendly platform and diverse range of templates, making it accessible to individuals without graphic design training. However, its popularity raises the question: is this accessibility a double-edged sword? Just as we can all use a calculator without being accountants, the ease of Canva may have its drawbacks.   For organisations with non-designers utilising Canva, there exists a hidden cost. Enthusiasts may unknowingly transition from creating simple online graphics to unintentionally diluting their organisation's brand. In today's digital landscape, platforms like Canva have revolutionised design, granting individuals with a computer and internet access the ability to craft visually appealing content without formal design training. While this empowerment is commendable, it also highlights a significant issue.

Stand under my… #umbrella Great post by Anna about the importance of the bigger picture. Event set-ups often lack this from a graphic perspective because the groups (sometimes multiple agencies) involved, design the visual elements in isolation. Here are three things you might want to consider if managing visual content for an event: 1. If you are working with a superwide LED wall and 16-9 PiPs - consider overlaying presentation template layouts over superwide backgrounds (as they will be shown live) to elliminate unecessary branding repetition and colour bleed between the two. 2. Consider Expo branding from the floor area to digital maps to delegate badges. Consistent colour usage to designate zones can be very helpful to attendees - a blue carpet for example, could highlight a floor area, be a blue zone on a digital map and experts in that area could have blue badges. 3. Top and tail video content with appropriate branding to set the scene, tell the story and then bring the audience back to the brand with an added call to action.
