A report I need everyone in PR, Marketing & Communications to read is One Step Forward, Two Steps Black. This report was recently released by UK Black Comms Network (BCN), founded by Kamiqua Lake, to increase the number and seniority of Black professionals in the UK PR and communications industry, which straddles over to influencer marketing and the work we do at SevenSix Agency. The report reveals that over 68% of Black and Mixed-Black professionals have considered leaving the PR industry. Black talent don't plan to stay in the industry and this needs to change. I finally had the opportunity to watch the full video Headline Media posted of a panel we hosted in London with LocalGlobe a few weeks back featuring insights from some of the best marketers we have worked with over the years such as Lauren Berkemeyer from YuLife, Yael Wissner-Levy from Lemonade, and Matthew Jones from Cowbell. It’s a true masterclass. Will try to share these great insights as they pop up.   Below is Yael Wissner Levy discussing how storytelling was a key element in Lemonade's GTM strategy from the ground up long before product hit market.    I get asked what the 40 or so unicorns we have been lucky enough to play with have in common. First, they are overwhelmingly second timer founders. As second timers, they know where to put their investment of time and resources right out of the gate for the best long-term outcome.  Almost all of them put storytelling at the top of the agenda early in the lifecycle of the startup. I promise you, these are hard-core tech guys so they don’t instinctively gravitate towards, or even like storytelling or marketing. BUT they do know that making “Phuking A” hires to run marketing or brand as early as possible and well before the product is ready increases the chance of adoption, and a massive ROI on their investment down the road.      Faye Co-Founder Daniel G. shared a similar experience with me at the event described, but gave credit to Viola Ventures Omry Ben David for encouraging them to grab the incredible Lauren Gumport during early days.  Needless to say, it is clearly paying off (Lauren and the Faye team are crushing it...).   Point is…dealing with storytelling and marketing is indeed a nightmare before product is ready, but the people with the most experience and success know that it is twice as hard to play catchup down the road with your positioning. Without building a significant brand narrative out of the gate, you will end up leaving money on the table. Enjoy.

Google searches related to the topic of Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) have gained momentum over the past two years, and we’ve felt this increased focus reflected in the briefs we receive at Tonic. We're asked to weave DE&I considerations throughout our work (and rightly so!) rather than as a standalone theme. In response, we recommend our clients take an explorative approach to DE&I, crafting cultures and spaces where employees can safely explore their identity, or identities. It's a contemporary approach that encourages intersectionality to flourish, and does away with crude tokenism. Great to see a big poster at Weston-super-Mare this morning for a London orchestra. For the next version, how about a QR code enabling the user to literally "share the wonder" through a channel-exclusive ticket offer for them and a friend? This simple change, supported by some box office work, would develop a static advert into an audience engagement and growth tool, and offer some v handy data off the back end. #artsmarketing

Let's stamp out the industry perception of women over 30 being less capable of "rising". The B&T Women In Media Awards "Rising Star" category recognises young women under 30 who are going places quickly and set to be future industry leaders. But why limit our celebration to just one age group? I propose a new category; "The Shooting Star" to celebrate women of any age who are making waves and setting a rising standard for industry leadership. To exclude women over 30 from consideration is a missed opportunity to recognise the renewed fire and passion they bring to their work and our industry. Sure they can go for other awards, but that's not the point. The point is the perception that women have to be young (under 30, specifically, which raises a question in itself about the importance of this particular birthday-cake threshold) to be capable of being a rising star... going places / headed towards becoming a future industry leader. It simply 'aint so. Ageism is unfortunately hugely prevalent in our industry, especially for women. Moments like this offer opportunity to move forward from ageism as an industry. Let's celebrate all women who are now going places quickly and demonstrating qualities towards becoming industry leaders. It's not about age - it's about mindset and achievements. I can think of a nominee or two (over 30) who would be perfect for a new Shooting Star category. Lisa Lie Sharni Ames Jahnna McKeag Virginia Scully Rebecca Ennis to name a few. Maybe you can add more? Or simply support this post for a "Shooting Star" as a future category in the B&T Women In Media Awards.
