In March 2023, in a significant development for apprenticeships, #UCAS embarked on a project to allocate Tariff points to UK Level 3 and SCQF Level 6 apprenticeships. This inclusion of #apprenticeships on the UCAS Tariff will enhance the visibility of pathways to higher education for apprentices, and support universities and colleges to understand apprenticeships alongside A levels, T Levels, and other Level 3 programmes of study. UCAS Tariff points for apprenticeships will be available for applications to higher education from September 2024 onwards. UCAS has developed a model for allocating Tariff points to apprenticeships. The model meets the aims and guiding principles of the project, set out in their engagement document. Now, UCAS wants to take the views of the wider sector on this model. Spotlight on Yorkshire 🔦 As a delivery and research partner for the York and North Yorkshire LSIF, one of Yorkshire Learning Providers’s key projects was to identify digital skills trends across the region. This data would not only support efforts to improve curriculum and meet local skills demand but also provide YLP and other local organisations with an accurate, timely overview of the Yorkshire region's digital blueprint to inform future initiatives. In March 2024, YLP partnered with Lightcast to get a complete report on digital skills trends across the following six priority sectors in the region: Agriculture & Agritech; Construction; Digital and Tech; Engineering; Health and Social Care; and Visitor Economy. "To support our research into the digital skills needs across York & North Yorkshire, we focused on three core categories – individuals, employers, and industry, to allow us to really shape the context of barriers, needs, gaps and recommendations. We felt it was extremely important for the research to include industry deep dives that provide data on the now, but also look to the future, in order to aid the response from education and curriculum. We, therefore, commissioned the expertise of Lightcast to complete a range of industry deep dives to add an extra element to the research." Today we published an Innovation & Research Caucus report looking at the profile of Innovate UK applicants and beneficiaries from small and micro businesses between 2016/17 to 2022/23. It represents a key step in really understanding who are the innovators applying for and accessing funding from the UK innovation agency. From a total of 48,024 eligible applications, of which 33,209 funding applications were matched to identify personal characteristics (i.e. gender, ethnicity and education), we have analysed 24,956 unique applicants. The findings highlight that there are statistical differences in the success rates of different applicant groups according to ethnicity and educational background but not by gender. Are you responsible for Quality & Enhancement at your university? If so, then the recent publication of the The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education's new edition of the UK Quality Code presents a great development opportunity, particularly for those in your team who are new to HE or early in their careers. Having chosen a set of principles they're most interested in (say, monitoring and enhancing provision, or managing partnerships), ask them to complete a mapping exercise and indicate how far your university meets or exceeds those principles. ➕ Go one further, and ask them what enhancements might be made to elevate practice in those areas. ➕ ➕ And bonus points if you then support them to present their findings at your equivalent of an academic standards committee. Just scale up or down the activity depending on the size of your team (if you're lucky enough to have one!). This exercise benefits individuals because: 👉 It allows them some agency in what might otherwise be routine work 👉 It provides them with an opportunity to showcase their talent & ability 👉 It helps improve their visibility across the organisation, potentially helping with progression #professionaldevelopment #appraisalseason #qaa

“Opportunities for practical science are particularly important for less engaged students but only 26% of GCSE students are doing hands-on practical work at least fortnightly, down from 44% in 2016, and interest in science has declined - this is perhaps unsurprising given how much we know students like practical work.” Alarming new report by EngineeringUK; clearly not enough has been done in the past decade to overcome these barriers! And it begs this question how are we going to compete economically on the world stage with these worrying trends?
