🚀 State of cloud: Key insights & strategies for success 🌩️ A recent report by Pluralsight dives into the world of cloud computing, looking at how businesses in the UK and around the world are using it. Here's the gist: 🔹 Widespread adoption: Almost all businesses (94%) use cloud services, and many (70%) have a good chunk of their tech infrastructure stored in the cloud (think online storage and programmes). But only a quarter (27%) of leaders think their cloud is actually making a big difference for their customers. 🔹 Strategic challenges: A staggering 69% of leaders don't have a clear plan for using the cloud - leading to ad hoc tactical plans and missed opportunities for transformation. 🔹 Cloud maturity: Most businesses are somewhere in the middle of their cloud journey. They're figuring out things like what strategy to use, how much to spend, how to get things set up securely, and how to keep it all safe. 🔹 Skill development: There just aren't enough people with the right skills to manage cloud tech effectively. Organisations need to invest in upskilling their current workforce in addition to recruiting. 🔹 Economic impact: Even with economic uncertainties and layoffs, cloud budgets and skill development budgets are likely to increase, emphasising the importance of cloud investments. 🔹 Multicloud complexity: With 65% of organisations operating in multicloud environments, the lack of extensive experience across multiple providers presents significant challenges. 🔹 Driving value: It's time to shift from consuming cloud services to creating value with them. Businesses need to think about how their cloud tech, the skills of their staff and their overall goals all fit together. Recommendations from the report: - Get a proper plan: Figure out what you want to achieve with the cloud, how you'll keep things secure, and what to do if something goes wrong. - Train your team: Invest in teaching your existing staff how to use cloud tech effectively. - Make sure everyone's on the same page: Leaders and techies need to work together towards the same goals. - Be careful with multiple clouds: Only go down the multi-cloud route if you have the right people and processes in place to handle it. Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced an £8bn investment to construct the next-generation hyperscale datacentres in the UK. This five-year plan is set to create approximately 14,000 jobs annually, spanning various sectors such as #construction, #facilitymaintenance, #engineering, and #telecommunications, thus boosting the local economy. The exact locations of these datacentres have not been disclosed yet but will enhance the existing capacity in London. Moreover, this initiative by AWS follows the trend of major tech companies like #Google and #Microsoft expanding their cloud infrastructure in the UK. Google, for instance, is investing £790m in a new datacentre campus in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, with contractors TSL, J & D Pierce (Contracts) Ltd, and Dornan involved in the project. Microsoft has also acquired a 48-acre site near Leeds to build a hyperscale datacentre, aligning with its increased focus on UK investments. This year has been slow-moving for recruitment in IT business change and transformation, but the UK’s 2024 budget gives some hope for momentum to pick up. With new funding dedicated to digital infrastructure and R&D, I’m optimistic about seeing a rise in demand for transformation roles that help businesses leverage this investment for growth. The emphasis on digital upgrades, especially with support for green energy and innovative tech, could drive significant opportunities for change and transformation specialists. That said, wage pressures and pension tax adjustments might add competition to attract and retain top talent, making it a dynamic time for recruitment strategy. As someone who works daily with talented professionals in this field, I’m hopeful these changes will lead to an active market for business change experts, helping UK companies accelerate toward a tech-driven future.
