Alarming that Ofcom fails to understand that the freedom of the press and plurality of media ownership are different and distinct things. Ever wonder how BBC radio programmes get made? Like most things worth doing, it usually starts with a ‘what if…?’ 🤔💭 Once or twice a year, the networks and stations open a commissioning window, when suppliers (independent production companies like Bespoken Media and in-house BBC teams) are invited to submit proposals. Because Bespoken’s focus is speech audio (rather than music), the big ones for us are Radio 4 in the spring, and the BBC World Service in the autumn. Right now. It’s a real art form, writing a good pitch. After 20 years of doing it, I think I’ve still got a lot to learn. In two or three paragraphs, commissioners want to know what is going to be in your programme or podcast, what it will sound like, and what it will say. They need to be confident that you can deliver what you say you’re going to deliver, and that you’ve got the resource and the expertise to do it well. They need to be bought in to your idea within seconds, before they feel compelled to move on to the hundreds of other competing proposals also sitting in their intray. Yesterday, we submitted 21 documentary ideas to the BBC World Service, with stories ranging from as far afield as Brazil, Canada, Spain, and Papua New Guinea - largely thanks to the efforts of our senior producer Carys W. who has led and organised this commissioning round. It’s an attritional process. Only 15-20% of ideas submitted get picked up, meaning the majority of the brilliant work done by producers is left by the wayside (or needs to be found another home). I hope to be able to tell you in a few months that 3 or 4 of these ideas have been picked up. If they have, that will set much of the tone and pace for our next year of work. But it’s a pretty precarious way to do business. If your ideas don’t get picked up, you’ve done a lot of work for no reward. When it comes to the survival of smaller audio indies like Bespoken, an awful lot can ride on decisions made, under significant pressure, by a small number of BBC senior people. But most of us have only ever wanted to make these kinds of radio programmes and podcasts - so it’s a process we willingly return to. In all my 16-17 years of journalism, I have met some really nice and helpful publicists who are thoroughly professional and upfront about their clients. By now I have learnt how to screen the good ones from the sly, shady ones. Things are different when you are working for a media house, but when you start working independently, you will notice a lot of them change colours. Anyhow, when you are established as an individual and create a network of trusted ones, here's what you need to watch out for before associating with PR firms. 1. Good ones always respect your work and approach you professionally. No PR person worth his/her mettle will cold call you or keep harrasing to follow up 2. The decent ones are not overtly friendly, or excessively needy. They are patient and upfront about what can be done or not from their end. If they know they are good at their work, they don't have to butter you up. 3. If you are PR person in 2024 and you claim to understand the marketing dynamics, you will not promise solo coverages for your brands. Even if you are besties with some editor, you know their boss sitting in the management won't let the plug pass unless it's paid or collaboration coverage. The good ones who understand this, will always approach you with an irresistible perk and a pitch hard to overlook. #HappyPrDay
