A recently digitised research on ResearchAfrica examines the benefits and challenges of airwave deregulation in Nigeria's broadcasting industry since the 1992 reforms. Key findings: - Deregulation promoted efficiency, competition, and accessibility, but also led to unethical practices by some broadcasters. - Regulatory bodies need to better enforce standards and ethics to address the challenges. - The media's role as an agent of development should be further supported through continued deregulation and stakeholder collaboration. The new Broadcast Bill is an important bill for the media ecosystem. I wish the Government would go beyond just regulating content and distribution issues. There are other important aspects in broadcast business - like say the use of content freely by international tech companies or even the low advertising rates that impede growth of the sector - I wish the Government would look into things holistically and not just in segments - my views on the article below #MIB #TRAI #media #broadcast

On August 27, 2024, a high-profile delegation from the News Broadcasters and Digital Association (NBDA), led by its president Rajat Sharma, met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss crucial issues affecting India's news broadcasting industry. Alongside Sharma, other key figures present included Rahul Joshi (TV18 Broadcast), Kalli Purie (TV Today Network), Sanjay Pugalia (NDTV), and Dhruba Mukherjee (ABP Network). The primary focus of the meeting was to address the ongoing challenges posed by the rapid digital transformation in the media sector, which has significantly impacted the growth of traditional news broadcasting. One of the most pressing concerns raised by the delegation was the Broadcasting Services Regulation Bill, which aims to replace the outdated Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act of 1995. The bill has sparked concerns within the broadcasting community as it proposes to regulate the burgeoning digital media space, including Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms and digital news services, raising fears of overregulation and a lack of clarity in the new legal framework. The NBDA emphasized that a fair, balanced approach is needed to foster the growth of both traditional and digital news media without stifling innovation. The meeting also focused on the challenges faced by broadcasters due to the growing dominance of digital media, which is reshaping how audiences consume news. The delegation expressed concerns over the diminishing revenue streams for traditional news outlets and the increasing difficulty in competing with digital-first platforms. As advertising revenue increasingly shifts to online platforms, traditional broadcasters are feeling the strain of adapting to a new media environment. Another topic discussed was the future of broadcasting spectrum allocation. The Department of Telecom's proposal to repurpose certain broadcasting bands for 5G and 6G services has sparked concerns that it could disrupt broadcasting operations. The NBDA sought assurances from the government that the broadcasting sector’s needs would be protected amid these technological advancements. With the media industry facing such a transformative period, this meeting with the Prime Minister is an important step in ensuring that India’s broadcasting sector adapts to these changes while continuing to thrive. #NewsBroadcasting #MediaIndustry #DigitalTransformation #PrimeMinisterModi #NBDA #MediaRegulation #OTTPlatforms #DigitalMedia #BroadcastingChallenges #TraditionalMedia #BroadcastingSpectrum

𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄: 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐈 𝐯𝐬 𝐅𝐌 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: 𝐀 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. The topic of "TRAI vs FM Broadcasters: A Balanced Perspective on Regulation" focuses on the challenges and discussions between the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and FM broadcasters regarding the regulation of radio broadcasting in India. TRAI, as the key regulatory body for telecommunications and broadcasting, plays a crucial role in shaping the policies that affect FM radio services across the country. FM broadcasters, including organizations like the Association of Radio Operators for India (AROI), argue that the regulations imposed by TRAI can sometimes limit the growth of FM radio. One of the primary concerns is the regulatory burden, such as pricing and licensing policies, which broadcasters feel are restrictive for both commercial viability and content diversity. Broadcasters are also concerned about the stringent content regulations that may hinder creative freedom. On the other hand, TRAI’s role is to ensure that the FM sector operates fairly, maintains quality service, and safeguards public interest. It aims to ensure that there is balanced access to airwaves, with no monopolistic control. TRAI has been working to improve the transparency in frequency allocations, ensuring fairness in how stations obtain licenses and renewals. Another key focus is protecting the interests of listeners by ensuring that broadcasters meet quality standards and provide a diverse range of content. For example, in its consultation papers and policy documents, TRAI has highlighted the need for a better framework for regulating FM radio stations, looking at issues such as tariffs, spectrum allocation, and content guidelines. Broadcasters have expressed concerns over the high license fees and the limited availability of frequencies in prime areas, which they argue restrict the ability of smaller and community-focused stations to thrive. However, TRAI’s perspective emphasizes that regulation is necessary to ensure equitable access to spectrum and to prevent market domination by a few big players. The challenge lies in finding a balance where regulations foster industry growth while ensuring public interests are not compromised. Broadcasters want less restrictive and more market-friendly policies, while TRAI aims to keep the airwaves accessible and free from monopolistic practices. Striking this balance remains a central challenge in the ongoing dialogue between TRAI and FM broadcasters. #FMRadio #Broadcasting #TRAI #RadioRegulation #MediaPolicy #CreativeFreedom #MediaDiversity #PublicInterest #BalancedRegulation #PolicyMatters #MediaDialogue #TelecomRegulation
