Start up investment schemes have been extended by 10 years 👏 This includes: ➤ The Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS)  ➤ The Venture Capital Trust Scheme (VCT) Both of which will now be in place until 5 April 2035. So what does that mean in reality? Here are my key take outs for UK challenger brands: ➜ Life is tough right now for challenger brands, but the UK economy NEEDs consumer brands to succeed in order to grow. Whilst working on GoPlugable we’ve often talked about our bootstrapping journey where we funded our first year of development almost exclusively through grants competitions and accelerator programs. And whilst we can’t win everything, with £150,000 of equity free funds raised in 10 months it’s fair to say we’ve had a pretty good run at it! I always recommend to startups to avail of the support out there and bootstrap for as long as you can, we’ve gotten support both locally and internationally and it definitely can be done. 💸 Part of what I love so much about being in the startup world is not only working on my own startup but also hearing what others are working on. I get quite a lot of messages from very early stage founders asking how we managed to build our platform and get it off the ground on bootstrapped funds - every founder I have the opportunity to help in some way has also taught me something. As always my inbox is open and I’m more than happy to answer any questions you have but I wanted to gauge interest for offering more in depth one hour calls to help you to be able to present your startup in the best way possible whether it be through an application programme, pitch deck, website or MVP. As a pre-seed startup in the UK, my experience mirrors this new strong data. I was lucky enough to find some fantastic first round investors who were willing to go on a capital-intensive journey to innovate, but an astonishingly few VCs in the UK - and the EU - were excited to take outsized risks for our outsized returns. Instead, many were looking for revenue at pre-seed on a tech-centric build: low risk, medium reward. (There were of course other reasons that some people passed, some excellent concerns & feedback, and some stellar funds in the UK, but I am 90% sure that my round as a whole would have been much easier in the USA.) Given my experience, the fact that I'm a US citizen as well, and the experience of nearly every other founder, I strongly predict that my next raise will be skewed to the USA. I will definitely be putting more energy there in the beginning. The UK has amazing SEIS and EIS, which moves money from the wealthy individuals into innovation, but the industry as a whole isn't there yet. (And those of you with SEIS and EIS with us, don't worry - if I do a flip, I'll do it correctly to protect you!)

With some time on our hands, we’ve launched a little project tooearly with a single and quite simple idea in-mind: personalised help for promising first-time founders. There is an abundance of resources online, but not enough 1:1 feedback, materials revision, as well as hands-on and community support. After working as a first-ticket/pre-seed investor, I’ve noticed how many stellar individuals out there are a little unsure when it comes to navigating the founding and fundraising journey (from ideation, to validating the hypotheses, speaking to the right customers, building your fundraising OS and raising VC funding), especially as first-time founders. If you’re looking to build something game-changing, let’s speak.
