Active Coaching in Football Balanced but active coaching is crucial during both training sessions and matches, as it provides the right mix of guidance and encouragement needed for players to learn and develop effectively. Active coaching involves making timely corrections and offering positive reinforcement, which helps players understand their mistakes and build confidence through acknowledgment of their successes. This approach accelerates their learning process, allowing them to grasp new concepts and skills more quickly and efficiently. In elite environments, where the highest standards are expected, a hands-off approach that asks coaches to step back and let players learn on their own can be detrimental. While autonomy is important, elite players benefit significantly from immediate and constructive feedback. Coaches play a vital role in observing the game closely, identifying areas for improvement, and providing tailored advice that players can implement in real-time. This active involvement ensures that players are constantly learning and adapting, which is essential for maintaining a high level of performance. Positive encouragement is equally important as it boosts player morale and motivation. When players feel supported and recognized for their efforts, they are more likely to push themselves harder and remain committed to their development. This creates a positive cycle where improved performance leads to increased confidence and further growth. In contrast, environments that emphasize minimal coach intervention can leave players without the necessary guidance to navigate complex game situations. While self-discovery is a valuable aspect of learning, elite players require a structured approach where they can receive expert insights and correct their course promptly. This balance of independence and active coaching ensures that players are not only skilled but also strategic and mentally prepared for high-level competition. This balanced but active coaching approach is certainly my way of coaching because it keeps players motivated to learn and focused at all times. Prescriptive coaching 🤔 I have worked in academy’s, have clients in academies and friends that work in academies. Why on earth are academies still saying that their playing style is same as the first team 🙈🙈 same formations, playing out from the back etc…. Why is this a problem - you are developing footballers not robots and: ⚽️ Managers are disposable in football, another manager can come in and completely change the philosophy yet all the academy players are still playing the old system. ⚽️ You have a different set of players for each age group, different needs, strengths, weaknesses and playing styles. ⚽️ The first team can buy players in that fit into there system of play. Academies don’t have this facility. ⚽️ The job of the academy is to allow players to explore different playing styles, positions, formations and allow them to deal with the environment more effectively not shoehorn them into one system. Obviously not all academies do this but there are still a lot that do. Is it lazy coaching, lack of knowledge, misunderstanding of skill acquisition 🤔

We have spent the last two weeks running educational programmes in Cricket, Football & Gaelic Games across the country and came across this really great quote from Brian Herbert today. Learning is a choice - we see this on every programme we deliver. Key considerations when planning player physical training needs. This figure from Walker et al. (2017) highlights key areas to consider when incorporating physical training within a microcycle. We must firstly consider the turnaround time between matches when planning subsequent training content. It is also important to factor in the different loads undertaken by starters and non-starters within your squad. Lastly, its crucial to understand individual requirements, such as injury history, to create bespoke training plans suited to each player.

UEFA B: How am I finding it? “Wow” - so much detail & learning. Some fantastic mentoring and teaching for us when we presented our sessions of constant questioning every detail “why”, “who”, “when”, “where” Making sure sessions are very detailed, realistic & causing yourself problems within opposition management and having solutions to then allow the coaching process to happen and you can step in and coach your players. Massive emphasis on “we coach from minute 1, no such thing as free play.” “Rational for everything” ~ you can play tactically how you want as long as you know WHY your team is set up the way they are. Probably even compared with my degree and now PGCE & QTS - the UEFA B by far is the most demanding & challenging course that has really made me think and rethink and add detail to my sessions (way more than I was previously planning for) And of course as well the important of Reflective Practise. The course is putting me out of my comfort zone especially as for the next practical assessment I have to again coach another defensive principle which I am less confident at coaching compared to offensive principles ~ but this is great for my development and with the help of my mentors I’m hoping it will go well! But in general the football knowledge and understanding that I am gaining through this course in terms of detail, tactics & technical information, how to coach & “The Welsh Way” is beyond anything I’ve experienced before and I’m really enjoying being challenged and out of my comfort zone! (No shame in saying it!) Makes me realise why I enjoy coaching and how it’s definitely what I want to do for my career (whilst maintaining teaching as a backup, but my clear priority is on my coaching journey.) Thank you Football Association of Wales for a brilliant UEFA B course so far at the halfway stage.

How they look or how they work?? Understand the difference Day 1. Programme 1: Approach focus Morning RATE & MAG Approach focus session with @_neeldhaliwal_ Each session is measured for ‘readiness’ & neural fatigue . On lower focus days these include @exsurgo.tech IMTP and Jumps. This determines the direction of the training session Day one , programme 1 of the 3 programme PDSF is focusing on bowling with a speed focus , 2% @pocketradar drop off and the approach zone Following a ‘controlled speed’ bowling tier we moved onto more power (magnitude) focused exercise. Using @1080motion to overload the complete bowling with a 220g ball We then moved onto @1080motion 20m sprint with 10kg load contrasted with Impulse mat drill Total balls bowled. 25 at an intensity beyond anything covered in nets or match day bowling Fast bowling is all about INTENSITY not VOLUME!! Reports must include: - the amount of PE and sport premium received. - a full breakdown of how it has been spent, including justifying any additional costs incurred (including the measurable impact that the school has seen on pupils’ PE attainment, physical activity, and sport participation due to the spending; and showcasing how the spend will be sustainable in the future) Schools must also publish the percentage of pupils within its year 6 cohort in the 2023 to 2024 academic year who met the national curriculum swimming and water safety requirements. The department will review the reports of a selection of schools to assess whether their PE and sport premium spending is compliant with the terms set out within this document. Recent data taken from the Sportsmith English Academy Football Performance Staff Report revealed that 49% of S&Cs/Sports Scientists in English academy football don't have an accreditation. Only 17% had UKSCA accreditation. Only 5% had BASES accreditation. Only 8% had both (UKSCA and BASES). These are pretty shocking statistics. But can we be surprised? Based on my experiences as both a BASES supervisor and mentor, these are just some initial thoughts on why this occurs: - BASES supervised experience pathway takes too long. Most start off well in the first year but effort drops off and often staff move to positions where accreditation isn't required. - UKSCA accreditation seen as too hard and NSCA seen as an 'easier' option. - Most jobs in football are recruited via word of mouth or offline. Thus requirement for accreditations is diminished. - Accreditations are seen as a 'tick the box' exercise rather than a process of self improvement for some. Acceleration Workout For Footballers ⚽️🔥 

I did have to miss out some of the prep work but this covers the majority of it 💯 When possible I like seperating acceleration & max velocity sprinting into 2 different days. However, this is NOT also possible depending on the athletes training schedule and phase of the season they are. Generally in the Off-Season the athlete has time to do 2-3x speed sessions per week with enough recovery in-between sessions When programming acceleration I generally follow these guidelines ✅ ➡️ Total Volume 120-170m 
This is dependant on the current phase the athlete is in, if the athlete has a really busy training schedule in the Pre/In-season we will only do 1 Speed session per week and if this isn’t possible we just micro-dose some Max V and acceleration work into their warm up throughout the week. Weekly exposure to high velocity sprinting is SUPER important. 

➡️ Generally volume will be higher in Off-Season. Usually increasing volume by around 5-10% per week. I also program Heavy-lighter resistance sprints throughout the course of the off-season and also increase the length of their sprints for Max V work. However, this will all be dependant on the length of the pre-season and their force-velocity profile. 

➡️ I always work on their weakness the MOST during the off-season as sometimes during this phase their performance MAY decrease before increasing so this is the best time to do this, then nail down on their strengths as their season gets closer. Again this all depends on the athlete. 

➡️ Sprinting technique drills should never be the main focus, unless your a more experienced athlete and have filled out your physical bucket. However, it is super useful to add in some drills that focus on hip projection, striking the ground beneath COM - or slightly behind for early acceleration, switching, etc. Coaches that say it’s not important are lazy and don’t understand the why it’s important 

➡️ Usually I program the bulk of my plyometrics after my sprint drills but it CAN be used in the warm up or both. I like dosing some into my warm ups to prepare local tissue & stabilisers for impact based movements & reduce inhibition from simply not being warm. However, I will do the main block after my sprint work

Radical results require radical changes! Its not naive nor too ambitious. It could not have come at a better time. There are approx 25,000 public schools of which approx 23,500 cannot offer extramurial activities due to a shortage of coaches, equipment and infrastructure. The coach shortage is north of the number of schools and the current teacher corps are buried in admin and overfilled classes. This is an extremely positive step in the right direction of DCAS and I am very happy to see the gap bridged between the two departments. If this is managed correctly, we will see a drastic improvement in the cognitive and physical development of our youth, specially at foundation phase where it has to start. This is how a nation create a winning culture, by making the young kids participate in structured play sessions in their masses at a young age. This is an iconic deal in the landscape of English cricket and possibly world cricket. GMR Group and Hampshire County Cricket Club and its assets, currently owned by Rod Bransgrove, have agreed to an aquistion! Rod has been such a huge contributor to the game in the UK. I personally think this deal will be the catalyst to opening the gates to further Indian investment into English cricket (not new news) which points towards a bigger holistic future of players being centrally contracted by franchises (not countries). Great insight from Pep Lijnders in this interview, providing a clear picture of his priorities and the principles he believes are essential for achieving success in football. From my perspective, developing a team requires a thoughtful examination of the club’s culture. It revolves around creating a model that balances the complexity of the game with a clear and shared vision. Valuing diverse perspectives, especially those from players, and constantly questioning our assumptions are fundamental to our progress. Our understanding of the game, like life, relies on models—interpretations shaped by our assumptions and experiences. There is no single right way to approach football. You have a way; I have a way. What’s crucial is embracing vulnerability, recognizing that compassion and winning are not mutually exclusive. It’s about discovering what truly works for you and your team.
