I’m A Consultant in Exile The Perils of Missing a “Checking Mechanism” Yesterday, a thought-provoking conversation with my friend Julian Burton - delta7 change ltd. brought to light a crucial aspect of my professional journey—being a consultant in exile without a robust checking mechanism. In the consultancy world (and in the scientific community), the value of collaboration and having your assumptions challenged cannot be overstated. It’s this interaction that sharpens our strategies and enhances our perspectives. However, working in isolation, especially without a group to question and refine your ideas, can lead your thought process astray. This absence of a checking mechanism not only affects the quality of our work but also impacts our professional growth. This might also shed light on why isolation is a fertile ground for conspiracy theories and magical thinking to take root. Business Capability Instance and Behaviour I have started a side task to document definitions commonly used by our team. As part of this, I've been having conversations with my colleague Sharon Merrison to discuss the meanings. Each definition has a specific business example to illustrate the concept. Sharon is a delivery manager, so was able to give clear feedback on definition means and examples. I tried to verbally explain the differences between business capability (BC) instance and behaviour and got into a right mess. So I went away and produced this 4 Box model. Pictures help me to declutter the excess of words we have, and to get concepts straight. BC instance example A good example is Content Management. DWP has three business critical Content instances: - Gov. uk: this is the text that describes the DWP products and services. The Gov. uk pages help customers to understand how their needs can be met by DWP. - Internal Instructions. DWP maintains comprehensive Intranet based instructions and guidance for colleagues to administer benefits. - Customer Notifications. When a customer is awarded a benefit, there are standard sentences and paragraphs that are used to generate the tailored award notification. All three instances have different operating models - job roles, organisation, process, data and technology. All three need to be maintained as a separate entity (i.e. instance). BC Behaviour example A good example is Evidence Management. Go back 15 years, and there was inconsistent handling of document evidence (e.g. birth certificates, passports, etc). Each business unit had its own mail opening function. Evidence would be handled differently, to varying timescales causing significant issues with customer experience, and causing complaints. The behaviour was made consistent with the introduction of a single mail opening unit service, which scanned, indexed, and trigger workflow tasks for all incoming post. Evidence documents could be easily identified, processed and returned to the customer within consistent timescales. Customers no longer had to phone DWP to complain about long delays in returning their evidence documents. The 4 Box model shows an example relationship for the Decision Management BC comparing instance against behaviour. This shows how in DWP Decision Management impacts on the customer experience, outcomes, efficiency and performance. An interesting article about Vin Diwakar's speech at HETT, where he spoke about the critical need to fix the NHS’s digital and data infrastructure. It’s a message that resonates strongly with me, particularly when we consider the ambitions for digitally enabled transformation. The core challenge is clear, we can't fully realise the potential of digital health, from AI-driven diagnostics to integrated care pathways, without first addressing the foundational digital infrastructure. But simply adding more technology won’t solve the problem. The focus needs to be on three essential areas: 1. Digital basics and literacy: From stable Wi-Fi to robust cybersecurity, digital patient records and digitally literate staff, we need to ensure that the essential infrastructure is functional, secure, and resilient. Healthcare professionals must have the systems they need and the skills and confidence to use these systems effectively. Investing in both infrastructure and training will ensure that digital solutions are fully leveraged. 2. User-centred design: Infrastructure is only valuable if it works for those on the frontlines. It’s essential to take a user-centred approach, ensuring that clinicians and care providers are supported by digital tools that enhance, rather than complicate, their workflows. 3. New integrated care models: The emphasis on EPRs and the federated data platform highlights the potential to enable new models of integrated care that go beyond organisational boundaries. It’s not just about data flow; it’s about using that data to deliver coordinated, person-centred care across the NHS, local authorities, social care, and beyond. These platforms must support collaboration between different providers to ensure a seamless experience for patients, regardless of whether they are in a hospital, community setting, care home, or managing their own care at home. Importantly, this must also work across regional and devolved boundaries, enabling the delivery of joined-up, population-based health services. At Channel 3 Consulting we know that true digitally enabled transformation only works when infrastructure and skills are not barriers, but enablers. As we collaborate with NHS leaders, our focus remains on pragmatic solutions that make digital health a seamless part of care delivery for both staff and patients. I’d love to hear your thoughts. A new approach to providing capabilities to meet evolving user needs in a changing world.

Total Stakeholder Integration - encouraging and enabling the 3 “groups” to “participate in, contribute to and benefit from” To illustrate this post, I used the front cover of the book titled “The Business of Systems Integration”, edited by Andrea Prencipe, Andrew Davies and Mike Hobday ( https://lnkd.in/dTSDihSq  ). The editors of the book I used to illustrate this post, champion what they refer to as the “new” Systems Integration “model” of “industrial organization”, whereby groups of firms (i.e., the “supply side”), join together (i.e., integrate) different types of knowledge, skill and activity, as well as human resources, to produce new products or services for the “marketplace”. Those who read what I write in the LinkedIn articles, will have surmised that this is what Contemporary Health Tourism was designed to do – and, has done. Furthermore, we are repeatedly reminded that the way to get stakeholders to interact, is through the existence of a "community" - which in the case of Contemporary Health Tourism, takes the form of an integrated economic ecosystem. And, to remind that Contemporary Health Tourism is a “system of systems” – with the two core systems being: ·        the 8 health-related Segments ·        the 3 Stakeholder Groupings The “overall system” is the Integrated Economic Ecosystem (a.k.a. the Network State). Furthermore, in addition to the “integration” of the supply side (which is what the book talks about), Contemporary Health Tourism additionally, integrates the: ·        demand side ·        investment side This approach is known as “Total Stakeholder Integration” – which encourages and enables the 3 stakeholder “groups” to: “participate in, contribute to and benefit from”. In summary, a distinguishing feature of Contemporary Health Tourism (a.k.a. - and symbolized by - ht8), is its encouragement and enablement of "total stakeholder integration", which in turn, led to the establishment of an Integrated Economic Ecosystem, with its transaction system and metamarket (a “marketplace” in the form of a “carnival” of markets which operate as a “single organism”). I've now had 5400+ peer reviews of my suggested answer to an NCEA L2 (~age 17) maths question. It turns out it is not perfect in no less than 4 different ways... 1 - I discounted the r=0 option as the volume would be zero. But r=0 isn't even an option to consider as negative power in derivative means we have a zero x infinity situation...which is mathematically messy and 'undefined'. Didn't impact answer, but I should have noted this. 2 - I used the approximation for Pi of 3.14 (old habits die hard), but quoted answer to 3 decimal places...Turns out the last digit is a 1 not a 2 if you use more digits of Pi... Depending on marking scheme this could be classed as just plain wrong. 3 - I missed writing the square down in equation 5, even though I used it in calculator so answer is right. 4 - Some have pointed out my superfluous use of decimal places. Giving the surface area to nearest micron (1000th of a mm) does seem crazy. However I did this so that I could compare to when r was a tiny bit smaller, and a tiny bit bigger, to check this was really a local minimum (not maximum) and check answer was likely right. Pretty tough being a student. I also had the luxury of time, google and 30 more years experience...
