The #lack of #progress in #standalone #5G #deployments highlighted in the GSA May 2024 Market Snapshot Report is a point worth noting. Stalled #Standalone 5G -The report indicates that the number of operators with deployed standalone 5G networks hasn't increased since the end of 2023 (at 49). This suggests a #slowdown in the #rollout of the next-generation 5G technology. Expectations vs. Reality- Standalone 5G promises significant #improvements in network #performance, #efficiency, and #flexibility. The lack of progress could be due to various factors like technical challenges, regulatory hurdles, investment considerations, infrastructure limitations, or delays in developing applications that fully utilize standalone 5G capabilities. Additionally, the transition to standalone 5G networks requires substantial infrastructure upgrades and investments, which can be both costly and time-consuming for operators. What is the difference between Events and L3 Messages? 👇👇 In LTE, Events and L3 (Layer 3) Messages serve different purposes within the radio and signaling protocol stacks. Here's a breakdown of their differences: Events Purpose: Events are triggers or conditions related to radio measurements that the UE uses to report its status to the network. They are used for radio resource management and handovers. Examples: Common events in LTE include: Event A1: Serving cell becomes better than a threshold. Event A2: Serving cell becomes worse than a threshold. Event A3: A neighboring cell becomes better than the serving cell by an offset. Event A4: A neighboring cell becomes better than a certain threshold. Event A5: The serving cell becomes worse than a threshold and the neighboring cell is better than another threshold. These events are typically used by the UE to report measurements related to signal quality and neighboring cell strength to help the network decide on actions like handovers or reselections. Usage: Events are defined in the Radio Resource Control (RRC) protocol and are used to initiate measurement reports that inform the network of changes in signal conditions. L3 (Layer 3) Messages Purpose: L3 messages refer to signaling messages at the third layer of the OSI model (Radio Resource Control, RRC). These messages handle communication between the UE and the network, such as connection establishment, configuration, mobility, and security. Examples: Common L3 messages include: RRC Connection Request: Initiates the connection between the UE and the network. RRC Connection Reconfiguration: Reconfigures the connection parameters or commands a handover. RRC Connection Release: Releases the connection when the UE no longer needs to maintain the connection. RRC Measurement Report: Sent by the UE to report measurement results (based on events) to the network. Usage: L3 messages are part of the signaling process and carry important information for session management, resource allocation, and maintaining the connection between the UE and the network. Key Differences Purpose: Events trigger specific measurement reports related to the radio environment, while L3 messages are used for overall signaling, connection setup, and control between the UE and the network. Scope: Events are more related to radio measurements and handover decisions, whereas L3 messages cover a broader range of signaling tasks, including connection management, configuration, and mobility. Usage: Events guide when to report signal measurements to the network, while L3 messages manage the actual communication and command exchanges between the UE and the network. In summary, Events are conditions that trigger reporting of radio signal measurements, while L3 Messages are actual communication packets at the signaling level used to establish, manage, and control the connection.

Thursday School: Spectrum Access : Improved Opportunities and Outcomes? Access to spectrum is the lifeblood of Mobile Networks. There are currently a number of initiatives in the UK and elsewhere aiming to improve access to spectrum for non-MNOs, largely recognising that these mechanisms have positive effects of society. The mechanisms vary, from CBRS, Local Access Licensing, Campus Spectrum, Shared Access (Lightly Licensed) and now new initiatives in Spectrum Sandbox. Looking, for example, at the proliferation and use of Shared Access Spectrum, we can see that the numbers and distribution are broadly good. 890 - mostly outdoors - licenses issued right across the UK. But what are they used for? The major use is different slants of Private Networks. Private Networks add coverage and capacity in unserved and underserved locations. They maybe Neutral Host Networks – deploying publicly accessible spectrum – Host Private Networks – deploying spectrum for exclusive use of the deploying body or landlord – or a Hybrid, deploying spectrum for both. For Neutral Host, integration with MNO systems and processes is needed. Freshwave’s Omni solution announced yesterday is an example of this, as well as Shared Access, Boldyn Networks, Dense Air, Cellnex UK, Wireless Infrastructure Group, NET CS and many others. For Host Private Networks, integration with Enterprise IT systems and processes is needed. Industrial and FWA are 2 examples of this. For Hybrid, it’s clearly both. A campus network could be a great example, opening up Private Land for Public Mobile Access, but also allowing connection and processing of private data, such as sensor data, CCTV cameras (optionally including Video Analytics/Computer vision). Middle-mile may have become more important than ever in terms of fiber networks because all the last-mile networks that will be built for BEAD need to connect to something. But honing-in on a precise definition of middle-mile is a challenge even for industry insiders. At the Fiber Connect show, a panel of middle-mile professionals had a spirited discussion. But when the moderator, Rick Talbot from ACG Research, tried to pin panelists down on the definition of middle-mile, he had little success. Joe Pellegrini, president and COO with Great Plains Communications, said, “It’s an end-to-end system with real estate, points of presence….
