🚗 ZEV mandate knock-on effects ‘catastrophic’ for residual values, MG commercial boss warns 🚗 Car manufacturer efforts to comply with the UK Government’s ZEV mandate are having a serious impact on EV residual values, and could in turn lead to higher leasing costs for fleets. That’s according to MG Motor UK Ltd commercial director Guy Pigounakis, who highlighted the measures some manufacturers were taking to comply with the mandate, which requires them to sell an increasing percentage of EVs annually, or face fines. #NewCarSales figures announced today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that new car registrations decreased by 1.9% in November year-on-year, and increased by 2.8% year-to-date. Our Managing Director of Sales, John Cassidy, has commented: “November saw another fall in new registrations as we limp towards the end of a mixed year for vehicle sales. “Although the fuel duty freeze extension will help motorists, there are still significant headwinds facing car owners. While consumer appetite for electric vehicles (EVs) certainly won’t be improved when owners will have to pay vehicle excise duty from next year, manufacturers appear to be backtracking on electrification plans. Many are sharing concerns over the Zero Emission Vehicle mandate targets. This, along with the slow rollout of EV infrastructure, will need to be addressed urgently if the Government wishes to realistically achieve its 2035 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles.” You can read the #SMMT’s full release here: UK new car registration data, UK car market - SMMT

🗣️ Philip Nothard, Insight Director, on the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT)'s June New Car Transactions: “The SMMT’s latest new market figures continue to paint a generally positive picture overall, but as always, the real story is in the details. "Battery electric cars are gaining ground, but their overall adoption remains steady rather than soaring and most registrations stem from fleets rather than private buyers. The low proportion of private registrations shows the level of caution still evident amongst consumers. "The industry unanimously calls on the next government to support the automotive sector and consumers with the transition to EV. The critical question now is whether we will see action. 2024 The UK new light commercial vehicle (LCV) market declined -4.5 per cent to 33,066 units in June, ending a record-equalling 17-month growth run, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Used car sold volumes at record levels in October Following a very positive September trading period when average values rose to the second highest point this calendar year, October values remained strong at BCA on the back of sustained demand from professional buyers as sold volumes reached a new high point. Used car values averaged £7,685 across the board at BCA in October 2024, with supply and demand suitably balanced to maintain the momentum felt throughout September. This represented a tiny reduction of just £34 or 0.4% from September and well ahead of the same period last year, when values were tumbling as the market realigned. In our latest Auto Retail Network Bulletin, we speak to Peter Smyth on used car strength and new car weaknesses. 2024 will be a performance that's split into two between new and used says the Swansway Motor Group, Group Director Peter Smyth. He says "Used car is buoyant and is going really well. The margins aren't quite as good as they were for the whole of 2023 but in quarter 4 of 2023, there was a big slump, and this correction hasn't happened this year. New cars is a different story.
