I agree with the following piece from Ken Getz, in the Reuters white paper, Pharma and Future: Powered by Partnership and Patient Experience, addressing the challenges of measuring impact and demonstrating value of patient engagement.  “Currently, not every function is as committed to supporting patient engaged drug development.” There are two clear challenges. One is the validity of current measurements and whether organizations are fully to committed to implementing and executing truly patient engaged activity. Two is the extent to which there is broad-based organizational preparedness and readiness to fully embrace patient-first approaches. “When you look at any transformative innovation, we do not do a good job of change management,” he says. Among the limitations are a lack of training and transparent, visible support for senior management. --- As I have stated earlier, I believe that in order to truly succeed with patient engagement in the pharmaceutical industry, the next challenges will be to develop standard processes for patient engagement, ensuring these processes are integrated into as many divisions and departments within the organisation as possible, and ensuring to collect and present the ROI data on the patient engagement activities. #clinicaltrials #patientengagement

We've just published a report which demonstrates just how valuable industry clinical trials are to the UK. Key takeaways are (2022 data) ⭐ industry clinical trials contributed £7.4 billion to the UK economy   ⭐ the NHS benefits from £1.2 billion in direct revenue from clinical trials   ⭐ industry clinical trials created 65,000 jobs overall, and 13,000 of those were in the NHS   There were wider benefits of industry clinical trials too.   ✅ Patients at research-active Trusts tend to see shorter hospital stays, and experience better care   ✅ Research-active trusts tend to have lower mortality rates   ✅ Participation in research also raises job satisfaction for clinicians - this is crucial   In short, industry clinical trials are a good thing and we need more of them.   The economy and jobs contributions were achieved despite the decline in industry clinical trials in recent years.   If industry clinical trial activity returned to levels comparable with 2017, an increase of 40 per cent on 2022 activity, the benefits to the UK would be even greater. An extra £3 billion would be contributed to the economy including an additional £486m of revenue to the NHS. This would support 26,000 more jobs, including 5000 more in the NHS.   How to deliver? The government is already doing a lot of work on this – but we can do more. Our immediate asks are:   🙏 Bring the outstanding clinical trials legislation into law. This is legislation that the UK needs to give companies certainty on how to operate in the UK   🙏 Accelerating delivery of the O’Shaughnessy review recommendations and investing at least an additional £60 million per year in workforce capacity and stimulating industry clinical research in primary care.   This would go alongside the £300 million that industry will contribute to boosting delivery of trials through the Voluntary scheme for medicines Pricing, Access and Growth (VPAG) Investment Programme. More exciting news on GLP-1 agonists: At a time when you think the excitement could not be any higher, we hear even more promising news about clinical use of GLP-1 agonists.  “The Times” published an article this morning (May 14) with these key messages: 1. Millions of middle-aged Britons should be routinely prescribed weight-loss injections to cut their risk of heart attacks and strokes by a fifth, according to a trial set to revolutionise medical practice. 2. The largest study ever into semaglutide, also known as Ozempic or Wegovy, found the drug cuts heart disease deaths by about 20 per cent even if people don’t lose weight. 3. The results — presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Venice — were hailed as the biggest medical breakthrough since the introduction of statins in the 1990s. A link to the publication in Nature Medicine and a link to the clinical study named SELECT (Semaglutide Effects on Heart Disease and Stroke in Patients With Overweight or Obesity) is attached below. Key findings are as follows: 1. The trial involved 17,604 adults over the age of 45 who had heart disease — a condition that affects 7.6 million in the UK — or had had a heart attack or stroke. All were overweight or obese, but none had diabetes. Half were given weekly semaglutide injections and the rest a placebo.  2. Over a trial period of three years and four months, the group who took semaglutide had a 20 per cent lower risk of heart attack, stroke or death from heart disease and also lost nine per cent of their body weight on average. 3. The drug delivered heart benefits regardless of how much weight people lost. Last week the DHSC launched the VPAG Investment Programme, which I'm pleased to see includes support for UK PharmaScan, the Government's horizon scanning database that collects information on medicines coming to the market.   PharmaScan has historically focused on identifying and preparing the NHS for the entry of new patented medicines, but with an increasing number of biologics due to lose exclusivity, there's an opportunity to use PharmaScan more strategically when it comes to biosimilars.   Introducing off-patent-specific fields to the submission template could help NHSE and NICE to identify molecules where there is opportunity to expand patient access, in addition to those for which the NHS might need additional uptake support. Doing so would enable the NHS to fully capitalise on the many loss-of-exclusivity events coming down the track. Did you ever reach Friday with a feeling that you don't quite want the working week to stop? You think I'm crazy....! Let me explain... This week I had the privilege to meet with clients and our expert teams to discuss the following projects (in no particular order): - A novel ADC candidate undergoing first in human trials in patients with advanced cancer - A gene therapy product targeting a single rare mutation leading to a variety of serious outcomes in children, which is ready for the clinic for the first time - A new injectable product focussed on making IVF cycles more convenient and hopefully more effective - An AI-based bedside imaging tool for use in emergency medicine with potential to improve diagnosis and therefore urgent care - A trial aimed at breathing new life into an often overlooked but effective therapy used in psychiatry - A simple OTC product which may help children avoid seasonal colds Perhaps now you may understand why I can't wait to see what next week will bring!
