There are control cabinet keys, and then there are Control Cabinet Keys. This lovely bit of kit from KNIPEX is most definitely the latter. How often do we all grab a £1 service key from the “special offers” tub on the counter in the wholesalers, only to have it break on its first outing? A good friend (Mike Worth) has often expressed irritation about this phenomenon. ✏️ The cost of manufacturing something of poor quality may be lower; however, the shipping cost is the same as that of something decent. Except that the broken, poor-quality items, need to be dealt with by waste disposal processes here. ✏️ If we’re lucky, the processed waste will be shipped back around the world to be made into a product again, hopefully something with a longer life. So, it's not cheaper at all, really. ✏️ The point of this post is that while certainly not cheap, this key should last for many years. 🌍 Ready for Recycling Legislation 31st March 2025? 🌍 My role as Head of Commercial New Business means I'm talking to prospective new clients daily, and there's one subject that I hear the same response, in that everyone seems to be aware the waste legislation change on the 31st March 2025, but I've not heard many people say they are underway with surveys or placing initial orders. From a supply chain perspective, we can now predict that demand will be super high from The New Year to Q2, however currently there is a window where manufacturers are stock piling and the demand is low therefore we currently have the resource to support with evaluations and surveys, plus there will be likely incentives for early orders pre Christmas. Building new, or refurbishing existing premises? Get us involved ! We cannot stress enough the importance of getting a pest controller involved when carrying out a refurbishment of your property, or new build project. We took on the pest control for a national restaurant chain estate several years and all sites had pest issues. Over the years this chain has refurbished/built new restaurants and we have been involved in the process, advising on potential pest risks at every stage. All these new sites have a 95% improvement in pest control. Coincidence? No. Just a very good lesson in putting in the hard work at build phase and reaping the rewards later. More national players are involving us in the "build phase" as part of what they do when they build a new site - it's great that this is happening - it makes SO much sense! Product selection should be determined by a site specific RAMS and this will lay out every detail of what's required, only then will you be able to make sure that what your are selecting is truly fit for purpose. So, many view the RAMS as what is written after the job has been won and then formed around the equipment that is already owned or been used before in the past. This can cause massive issues which may not be realised until something goes wrong. Things like rescue can often be overlooked, where as it may be far better to work backwards from requiring a rescue to performing the task as this ensures equipment harmony and safe operation. This will emphasise issues like needing to use the secondary system if the primary fails and that may show that operating this piece of equipment is almost impossible if it's location is on the other side of the davit when rotation is required. Or it could be something like the davit needs rotation when entering or exiting so the wire doesn't run at angles over the main roller, this introduces cutting hazards to the wire in the event of a fall. If these things are making you question what you are doing, that's great because the better the RAMS are written the more likely it is that everything will go smoothly, even if an incident takes place.
